Since sex addiction is defined as an intimacy disorder, it is not surprising then that the two most common characteristics contributing to the formation and progression of sex addiction are wounds to an individual's innate vulnerability and expression of authenticity, both of which can threaten a person's capacity to be intimate.<br>Understanding sex addiction from a neurological perspective allows each patient to see that their addictive behaviors started as is an automatic reaction formed by trauma.

The result is behavioral shutdown, freeze, and collapse. We can see an exampleoftheactivationofthisnerveinanimaldocumentarieswhenalionischasingagazelle, and the gazelle, knowing that it cannotght oree the lion, drops to the ground and appears dead,hopingthelionwillleavethegazellealone,thinkingthatitisdead,orifitdecidestofeast onthegazelle,thisresponsehelpstopreparethegazellefordeathwithminimalpain. If all goes well and as expected in our daily lives, we can stay within our foundation by self- regulation,utilizingourventralvagalresponse. Thoseofuswithunresolvedtraumaaremorelikelytohavemanymorethreatsthanthosewho didnotexperienceearlytrauma If, however, there is a threat, our sympathetic branch will be activated and take us out of our foundation,placingusintoastateofeitherghtoright.Wewilleitherangrilylashoutornd a way to run away, depending on how large the threat is. It is important to remember that threats can be real or imagined, but our bodies will react in exactly the same way. Those of us with unresolved traumaare more likely to have many more threats than those who did not experience early traumaor adverse developmental experiences or those of us who have since hadthistraumaresolved.
