At UTSA and NU-MRSEC, researchers are advancing Nano-Doctors using Lanthanide-based Nano-composites. These materials emit brighter light when combined with gold particles, enabling precise drug delivery and targeted cell destruction. Nano-composites consist of Chitosan for drug transportation, Gold for cell heating, and Lanthanides for tracking via MRI systems. Explore photos of magnetic nanocomposites, microscope images of nanoparticle components, and colorful nano-composites showcasing their diverse applications in healthcare.

The Development of Nano-Doctors Dhiraj Sardar, University of Texas at San Antonio, DMR 0934218 • Recently researchers at UTSA and NU-MRSEC have progressed in the development of Nano-Doctors. • One material that is currently showing GREAT promise as a nano-doctor is known as “Lanthanide based Nano-composites”.Recently PREM researchers have discovered a method for making our Nano-Doctors emit light that is stronger and brighter with gold jewelry (tiny gold particles attached to the surface of our lanthanide particles). • Our nano-composites are composed of THE FOLLOWINGS: • Chitosan has the ability to carry drugs and release those drugs specifically, • Gold has the ability to heat its surrounding to high temperatures in order to destroy diseased cells while leaving healthy cells intact • Lanthanides will allow us to track these materials using commercial MRI systems and cameras.
