3. PARCC Assessments The PARCC assessments will allow us to make important claims about students’ knowledge and skills as they relate to the Common Core State Standards. • In English Language Arts/Literacy, whether students: • Can Read and Comprehend Complex Literary and Informational Text • Can Write Effectively When Analyzing Text • Have attained overall proficiency in ELA/literacy • In Mathematics, whether students: • Have mastered knowledge and skills in highlighted domains (e.g. domain of highest importance for a particular grade level – number/ fractions in grade 4; proportional reasoning and ratios in grade 6) • Have attained overall proficiency in mathematics

4. PARCC Summative Assessments • PARCC’s primary goal is to develop a summative assessment system comprised of two components. Each component will be completely computer-delivered and will leverage technology to incorporate innovations. • The two summative assessment components aredesigned to • Make “college- and career-readiness” and “on-track” determinations • Measure the full range of standards and full performance continuum • Provide data for accountability uses, including measures of growth

5. PARCC Summative Assessments • Required summative assessment components • Grades 3-11 in English, Language Arts, Literacy • Grades 3-8 in Mathematics • End-of-Course Mathematics tests in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2; or Integrated Mathematics 1/2/3

PARCC Assessments • PARCC summative assessments will replace current FCAT 2.0 and End-of-Course tests currently being administered in Writing, Reading, and Mathematics • Current Florida assessments in non-Common Core content areas will remain in place: • FCAT 2.0 Science in Grades 5 and 8 • Florida’s Biology EOC assessment • Florida’s US History EOC assessment • Florida’s Civics EOC assessment • Retakes for Florida’s Grade 10 Reading and EOCs as required

7. PARCC Summative Assessments • Required summative assessment components • Performance‐Based Assessment (PBA) – administered about the same time as current FCAT Writing, and comprised primarily of performance tasks. Results incorporated into summative score • End-of-Year Assessment (EOY) – administered about the same time as current EOCs, and comprised of innovative, machine-scorable items. Results combined with PBA results to yield a single summative score

PARCC Summative Assessments • Required summative assessment components • Performance‐Based Assessment (PBA) – Current design calls for two days of testing per student for ELA/ Literacy, and one day of testing per student for Mathematics • End-of-Year Assessment (EOY) – Current design calls for one day of testing per student for ELA/ Literacy, and one day of testing per student for Mathematics • Testing windows will be designed to accommodate school/ district needs. Testing session lengths are still to be determined.

9. PARCC Item and Task Prototypes • The following section of this presentation shows sample PARCC summative assessment items in writing, reading, and mathematics. • Information is included that shows how the PARCC assessments differ from FCAT assessments in each area.

10. PARCC Item and Task Prototypes – Writing Assessments • Rather than having students write an essay responding to a prompt on a specific topic as on FCAT, PARCC requires students to gather information from a single or multiple texts they have read and use that information to develop the writing they do for the assessment. • This is a key area of emphasis in the Common Core State Standards, and reflects the expectations of college- and career-ready students. • The writing will be scored to also assess mastery of reading skills. • Samples are demonstrated on the following slides.

11. PARCC Item and Task PrototypesGrade 6 Text-Based Narrative Writing “ In the passage you have read, the author developed a strong character named Miyax. Think about Miyax and the details the author used to create that character. The passage ends with Miyax waiting for the black wolf to look at her. Write an original story to continue where the passage ended. In your story, be sure to use what you have learned about the character Miyax as you tell what happens to her next.”

12. PARCC Item and Task PrototypesGrade 7 Text-Based Research Simulation Writing Task “You have read three texts describing Amelia Earhart. All three include the claim that Earhart was a brave, courageous person. The three texts are: a. “Biography of Amelia Earhart” b. “Earhart's Final Resting Place Believed Found” c. “Amelia Earhart’s Life and Disappearance” Consider the argument each author uses to demonstrate Earhart’s bravery. Write an essay that analyzes the strength of the arguments about Earhart’s bravery in at least two of the texts. Remember to use textual evidence to support your ideas.”

PARCC Item and Task PrototypesGrade 10 Literary Analysis Task “Use what you have learned from reading “Daedalus and Icarus” by Ovid and “To a Friend Whose Work Has Come to Triumph” by Anne Sexton to write an essay that analyzes how Icarus’s experience of flying is portrayed differently in the two texts. Develop your essay by providing textual evidence from both texts. Be sure to follow the conventions of standard English.”

PARCC Item and Task Prototypes – Reading Assessments • Rather than measuring reading using 4-option multiple-choice test • items as on FCAT, PARCC will use a wide variety of test items. • These include more traditional item types as well as innovative items types such as drag-and-drop, or multiple choice items that have two or more parts to each question. • As noted previously, reading comprehension is also scored as a component of the writing tasks at each grade • Samples are demonstrated on the following slides.
