Problem Statement • The problem is that an alarm is not always enough to wake people up. • I myself can sometimes not wake up only with an alarm clock, as I just turn it off and go back to sleep. Instead I need someone to really shake me before I actually wake up. • Not waking up on the required time can cause people to miss important meetings or they’ll be very late. This can be a very big problem as it could cost them their job or get them expelled.

  4. My parents would not need to wake me up and it would give them more time to sleep. • I might even miss school if I don’t wake up on time, this could possibly make my group partners in a presentation lose a grade because of me.

  5. Design Brief • I will design and create a robot that will be able to tickle or briefly shake people, it will keep doing it until its turned off, which will be done after the person has woken up. The robot will also play recorded voices. • This product is for people who have difficulty waking up on required time for some event or job. Sometimes an alarm clock is not enough to wake someone up, as people just sleep because the alarm is not physically waking them up. This robot will help in really forcing the person out of sleep without any harm.

  6. My robot must be able to sense a person that is sleeping. It must be able to walk to it taking steps and then shake it. • It will sense a person is sleeping when it senses something moving (the person's belly when they breathe) then it will decide to walk up to them and the robot will move its arm back and forward to nudge the person until they are awake and they turn it off. The person will give the robot the time at which it will try to wake the person up. It will have a clock that will help it sense when its time to act. It will also sense how far away the person is and will decide how many steps to take before moving its arm.

  7. RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS

  8. 1. Alarm Clock • Alarm Clocks is the most traditional way to wake up in the morning. These are available everywhere in the world. We have to give the clock a certain time, and then it will start ringing, to help us wake up from sleep and sometimes they are even used as reminders (when its time to go somewhere). Nowadays they are even in Mobile phones, and its more common to use your cell phone as an alarm.

  9. Alarm Clock Positives: • 1. They are disturbing to sleep, and the sound can wake you up. • 2. They help you stay organized and keep a consistent sleeping time. • 3. You can put your own ring tone which plays. So you could wake up to your favorite song. Negatives: • If you are very sleepy, you might just turn it off and go back to sleep. This is why the alarm might need a sense that knows the person is up before it turns off. • The alarm clock could be knocked off the table when a person wakes up and stretches. This could break the alarm clock. We could prevent this by keeping the alarm clock out of hands reach.

  10. Alarm Clock tools Sense: • The alarm clock senses the time that the person has fixed for it to ring at. It is programmed that way. Decide: • It decides to ring the alarm when its time. Act: • The alarm rings as soon as its time. It stops when the person presses the button to turn it off.

  11. 2. ‘Mr.Wake’ • Researching on the internet, I found a similar robot to what my idea is. This is named ‘Mr. Wake’. The Robot is a ringing alarm but if you go to turn it off, it evades capture and moves away. This is so that you don’t just turn it off and go back to sleep, this forces you to chase it and get up. This helps me get an idea of how my robot might wake up people, mine is meant to shake people instead of run away from them, but I got an idea of how it might move towards the person.   12. ‘Mr.Wake’ • Mr.Wake is created by Vadim Ryazanov. He is from Azerbaijan Positives: • 1. The product will help people wake up for important meetings. • 2. Someone can’t just turn it off and go back to sleep. • 3. It can sense an object in front, so it can stop before breaking it. Negatives: • The robot might fall down if put on a table, because it moves automatically. This could be prevented by putting it on safe ground. • The robot could be bad for people with injuries who can’t move. They will be inable to stop the alarm since the robot keeps moving but they can’t. This could be fixed if there is a button, that if turned if, will stop the robot from moving.

  13. ‘Mr.Wake’ Sense: The robot senses the person coming close or an object in its way. Decide: The robot decides how much to move or turn when an object is in front, or when the person is after it. Act: The robot moves away from the person, it can stop and turn right or left. • Cost to build: • $80 • Time to build: • 16 hours • Weight: • 900 grams

  14. 3. Humans • I am going to think about the positives and negatives of when a human wakes you up. This will help me in thinking about what an alarm robot might need, so its as efficient as when someone shakes you, so you wake up. Usually when this happens your family member shouts your name and shakes you till your awake.

  15. Positives and Negatives Positives: Humans have brains so they won’t stop until your actually awake. Alarms are usually songs and tones. Humans can shout your name and go as loud as necessary. Humans can physically wake you up without harming you. Negatives: The other person needs to be awake for you to wake up. If they don’t wake up then you might stay asleep, you have to depend on them. The other person is wasting time that they could use for other important things, rather than waking you up.

  16. How it helped me. • These examples helped me because now I can make my robot as effectual as another human waking someone up, but you wouldn’t be depending on another person, but on a robot that is programmed. I also looked at other alarm clock robots to help me see similar robots. I saw how the ‘Mr.Wake’ robot senses someone coming close and then moves away. This helps me think of how my robot will sense, decide and act.

  21. Testing • Checklist I can test no.1 by using the arm to shake people, if 9 out of 10 people don’t think its too much pressure, then it will meet my specification. I could test no.2 by giving the robot a 1 neutron push and see if it passes half a meter. I could test no.4 by recording my voice and seeing If I can play it and my voice is enough to wake someone up.

  22. Testing • Survey I could test no.3 by putting the alarm for the time in 5 minutes, and then when the alarm rings and the robot comes to shake the person, I can find out if it senses them or not. I could ask people if they like the design or not.
