Evaluation of Island Width in VACISLD Using VMEC Data: Errors and Benchmarking Challenges

This study evaluates the island width in VACISLD by analyzing VMEC data. We discovered errors in the VACISLD code that clarify the reasons behind prior failures to benchmark with PIES. Notably, island size has been underpredicted by approximately a factor of 4. A critical finding is that the phi coordinate must be the full phi, varying from 0 to 2π over the machine rather than per period. It is essential to utilize VMEC phi_p instead of phi_edge, as they differ by 2π.

Island Width Evaluation used in VACISLD using VMEC data Errors in VACISLD code found which explain why earlier attempts to benchmark with PIES failed. Island Size under predicted by a factor of ~ 4. phi coordinate must be full phi ( varies 0 to 2 pi over machine, not per period – differs by Nper ) must be VMEC phip, not phiedge ( differs by 2 pi )
