    3. Ford and Inflation When Ford took office, the economy went from bad to worse The oil embargo had caused fuel prices to rise further and push the overall inflation rate in the country past 10%. Ford rolled out a plan called, WIN, “Whip Inflation Now”. He asked Americans to cut back on their energy usage. But, with no incentives to do this, few Americans did. He and the Democratic Congress did not get along which cause very few bills to become law.

    4. Carter and the Economy President Carters felt that the energy crisis was the most important issue facing the nation. He urged Congress to pass laws that called for greater fuel efficiency and more energy development. The President was met by fierce opposition from the U.S. auto industry which lobbied against increasing fuel economy and from representatives in states with a large the oil and gas industry

    5. The National Energy Act It placed a tax on gas-guzzling cars and removed price controls on domestically produced oil. The government even gave subsidies promote alternative sources of energy. This helped, but a new crisis in 1979 in the Middle East caused a second major fuel shortage. Additionally, OPEC raised the price of oil. This caused inflation to rise again. By 1980, the standard of living in the U.S. went from 1st to 5th, inflation was the highest it had been since 1947, and the nation’s unemployment was on the rise.

    6. The American Economy Changes Since the 1950’s, the American economy has shifted from a manufacturing economy to a service economy. In 1950, manufacturing was 41% of the economy In 1980, manufacturing dropped to 28%. By 2000, manufacturing dropped to 20% The reasons for the decline in manufacturing were better technology, which means it takes fewer workers to make the same amount of products and and increase in foreign competition.

    7. Iran In 1953, a communist-backed party seized control of Iran. The shah of Iran, Muhammad Reza Shah Pahlavi who took the throne in 1941 was deposed. Several days later, the CIA overthrew the Soviet backed government. As a result, American oil companies gained lucrative concessions and the U.S. gained a strategic ally in the region.

    8. 1979 By 1979, the Shah was in trouble. Iranians hated his regime’s widespread corruption and dictatorial tactics. In January 1979, revolution broke out. The Muslim religious leader Ayatollah Khomeini overthrew the Shah and instituted a religious state based on strict obedience. In October 1979, President Carter let the Shah enter the U.S. for cancer treatment. This angered the revolutionaries in Iran. On November 4, 1970 they ceased control of the U.S. embassy in Tehran and took 52 Americans hostage. They demanded the U.S. send the Shah back to Iran in return for the release of the hostages. Carter refused. The situation ended 444 days later.
