  1. Understanding Screw Piles and How They Work

  2. Screw piles are one type of a deep foundation that is usually installed first and has the least amount of vibration and noise. The screw piles are usually wound onto the ground just in the same way that the screws are wound onto the wood. This is an efficient installation method that is combined with their method of dispersing load to provide an in-ground performance that is effective in a wide range of soils.

  3. How screw piles work These piles are usually made of some circular and hollow section of steel with some helices that are attached. The screw piles usually cut into the soil after a constant pitch rather than auguring through the soil. These helical shafts and flights are designed in a manner that is likely to suit a particular ground condition.

  4. After the pile has reached a target depth, it will remain permanently in that place and is usually filled with concrete. The protruding reinforcement offers the connection to the structure above and will in some cases increase the pile’s capacity.

  5. The installation process The powerful hydraulic motors are used in the application of torques necessary for the screwing of screw piles onto the ground. These motor are usually fastened using handling machines ranging from ½ T Bobcats, the 20T Excavators up to the mast mounted crane rigs of 100T.

  6. There are several factors that determine the combination of the handling machine and the hydraulic motor .These includes: • The minimal requirement for torque installation • The shaft’s torsional capacity • Limitations such as width and height of the site access • The site ground condition as well as the soil profile • Positional tolerance • The interconnection of the two • Interface between the building and the pile
