Module 1 - the basics I • Overview/Objectives • Introduction to basic drawing techniques and fundamentals - line, shape, space, composition, scale, mark-making, media • Learn to draw what you “see” not what you “know” • Develop perception and hand to eye coordination skills • Perceive and explore space and object interaction. • Introduce drawing with various black and white drawing materials including charcoal, conte, pencil • Acquisition of terminology and vocabulary of drawing • Begin to reflect on process and works created Module 1 - the basics I Overview/Objectives Contour line drawing: blind, quick an cross contour Gesture drawing Reflection** Breaking boundaries - Composition / negative space Group-evaluation** Project* Statement** Evaluation** Introduction to line art and contour drawing Introduction to gesture – objects in motion, motion in objects (the gesture is the essence) Reflection on works submitted online during each distance session during each distance session Sample and activity to experiment within the limits of the new acquisitions. Critique discussion by tutor and other learners in online setting and informal evaluation by teacher. Lengthier project using acquired techniques. Statement of intent and analysis of resulting work. Note: *Projects will be suggested but it will be encouraged that the group to suggest and justify its own projects or that the tutor/instructor suggest projects that suit the needs of their group. **Students will learn to verbalize concepts of drawing and design in class or online critique sessions and use the vocabulary and techniques of art criticism to analyze their own work, that of peers and other artists.

Module 1 - Objectives and overview • Objectives • Introduction to basic drawing techniques and fundamentals - line, shape, tone, space composition, scale, mark-making, media • Explore preconceptions • Learn to draw what you “see” not what you “know” • Develop perception and hand to eye coordination skills • Perceive entire object in relation to the drawing surface. • Begin to reflect on process and works created Overview: Description of ‘symbol making’ vs ‘drawing’ - right and left side of the brain ‘modes’ (betty edwards, p.81) The goal of the exercises in the first module will be to get you to shift your way of seeing so that your capacity to observe and record will be brought to the forefront, and to enable you to recognize and put to use this shift. The emphasis will be on observation, not accurate reproduction. Materials: • drawing paper for exercises ( at least 46 cm x 60 cm ) - newsprint, drawing pad • pencil (2B) • thin and thick charcoal • pen and ink
