  21. “Love Symbol” • Prince • Prince Rogers Nelson • The Artist Formerly Known as Prince • Mr. Nelson • Skipper • Jamie Starr • Joey Coco • Paisley Park • Alexander Nevermind • Christopher

  22. Open platform for identity management - best suited for professional societies and .ORG communities - can use any certified identity management software - provides Open Source &/or commercial methods for extending Trusted Claims within the Open Identity Framework • Current WeOpenID Server requirements.  • - Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption • - Strong password encryption for your community • - Privacy policy that puts user in control of personal information

  23. Trust Networks: Build on Existing Structure • The Internet was started as a joint venture between government and academic institutions.  Open Identity and Open Trust will benefit from a similar relationship as it starts. • Trust Networks with no single point of failure and no single point of control will maximize Digital Identity data management • The design of the Trust Network will benefit from insights into behavioral & neurobiological bases of trust

  24. Behavioral Science and Trust • Trust increases oxytocin, which in turn increases trustworthiness, which causes a reciprocation of trust, which then increases oxytocin, which in turn...(Zak, 2008)

  25. Trust metrics

  26. Technology and Social Engineering • In 2002, the journal Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books was losing subscribers and money • Reviewers agreed to review books but then never did them • Latency issues impacted the journal’s relevance to science • APA’s publisher, Gary VandenBos, PhD believed that the review of monographs was still important to science

  27. Technology and Social Engineering • Dr. VandenBos converted the Journal to a database and called it PsycCRITIQUES. • He devised a web-based system where editors could easily build a database of reviewers and classification systems for their areas of expertise • He created a workflow where portions of the books were digitized for an initial review by the Editor • A web application was deployed to allow Editor to receive PDFs, then select qualified reviewers via a search • E-mails were deployed; the first reviewer to click the link in the e-mail would get the print copy of the book. • Remaining reviewers would be notified that the review opportunity was closed.

  28. The Emergence of a Digital Community

  29. Digitalizing Social Networks • Digital Identity in Scholarly & Scientific Societies“facebook-style” professional networks have capabilities to plug-in different facets of the researcher's identity (VivoWeb) • Open Identity & Linked Data approach integrating open identity data from several sources allows to connect, fuse, and develop similar professional networks beyond institutional and national limits(Ontoframe)

  30. Increasing Value for Digital Identity • Scholarly and scientific societies can lead the process of increasing value by nurturing guilds within their communities. • Guilds produce close peer • relationships that result in better science. • Linking open identity data will allow us to fuse professional networks together, beyond institutional and national limits.

  32. Predicting the Future This year, all three Nobel Prize nominees were accurately predicted based on the citation impact of their published research in ISI Web of Knowledge. The nominees received the prize on October 5, 2009.

  33. Expansion of the Trust Network • Trusted Communities will arise out of robust and secure Community Intranets • “Facebookitzation” of scientific guilds and trusted claim validation will drive demand outside the guild • OpenID/Information Card Stack will provide machine-to-machine trust • Guilds need to develop robust Trusted Claims within the scope of their community first, then extend those claims in a formal agreement as a certified Open Identity Provider

  34. Light, Layered & Extensible Framework for Trusted Claims • Light- no single code source- easy for professionals to obtain, install, and certify- “interoperable”, with ability to plug into existing APIs • Layered- all levels of trust need to be explicit in the transaction- OpenID users should always have ability to extend or retract their own trusted claims- a “reboot” of identity would revoke all extensions of a trusted claim, but not the trusted claim itself • Extensible- each Identity Provider has the ability to add its unique trusted claims to the Identity Stack as an extension to the underlying OpenID Information Card Stack

  35. Nurturing Trust Value Digital Identity is not about any single protocol; rather, it is about any protocol that adds value to the human experience. OpenID serves as the transport mechanism.
