New York • England controlled N and S– wanted the middle (Dutch) • Main settlement was New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island • Dutch gave patroons large pieces of land to settle • Peter Stuyvesant ruled– strict & unpopular • He surrenders without a shot– no support • King of England gives colony to his bro Duke of York– renamed New York

  3. New Jersey • Duke of York gives some of land to Lord John Berkeley and Sir George Carteret • Made $ by charging settlers rent • Freedom of religion, all white men had a vote • No natural harbor, struggled, became royal colony

  4. Pennsylvania • William Penn was owed $ by the King, instead gives him piece of land as big as England • Penn was a Quaker- believed people were equal, inner light, pacifists, church services unnecessary, treat NA’s fairly • Philadelphia founded, Penn advertises for settlers

  5. Delaware • Originally part of NJ, then given to Penn cause didn’t have coastline • People living there didn’t want to be part of Penn, broke away and became on colony
