  2. You need to know: What radicalism is and how Scots were affected by it. What the ILP was and why many Scots supported it. What was meant by Red Clydeside. Why many Scots supported the union and wanted to be part of Scotland within Britain. What is this issue all about? • You will be studying the effect of the war on Scottish politics.

  4. What effect did the war have on Scottish politics? • In 1914 the UK had a Liberal government and in Scotland the Liberals were the most powerful party.

  5. Much less important. Represented mainly in the rural areas and by the wealthy land owning classes. The Labour Party had not yet made any significant breakthrough into national politics. Supported by working class men. The other parties The Conservative & Unionist Party The Labour Party

  7. War! At the start of WWI the Liberal Party was divided over the issue. Traditionally opposed to British involvement in wars the issue caused some Liberal politicians to resign. The decline of the Liberals – what split the Liberal Party? Those who resigned set up the anti war organisation – The Union of Democratic Control

  8. Anti War Liberals • Arthur Ponsonby was so outspoken that the Liberal Party was unwilling to allow him to stand at the next election.

  9. Problems caused by the arguments within the Liberal Party • Weakened the organisation. • Demoralised party workers. • Party funds collapsed “Unless additional subscriptions were obtained it would be impossible to appoint organisers”

  10. Old liberal ideals • The ideas at the heart of Liberalism were abandoned during the war. • Liberalism had always believed in non intervention.

  11. Old liberal ideals • Conscription and direct government intervention in the economy went against the basic ideas of Liberalism. • Bitter arguments & a greatly weakened the Liberal Party

  12. The shell scandal • In early 1915 Sir John French complained that British attacked were being hampered by a lack of ammunition. • Reported in the Mail & Times. • Liberals seen as weak and needing help.

  13. coalition • A new coalition government was formed. • Ill feeling between Asquith & Lloyd George. • December 1916 Lloyd George replaces Asquith as PM.

  14. At the end of the war in 1918 Lloyd George called the “Coupon Election”. • Coalition MPs were given a letter of support from LG & BL.

  15. Results of the coupon election • All 159 Lloyd George Liberals won their seat. • Most Liberals without the coupon lost • Asquith also lost his seat.

  16. 1924 • Only eight Liberals left to represent Scotland! Why?
