  1. (Bilingual Course) Microbiology Department of Chemistry and Life Science Lecturer: Li Yong ( Email: L68116@163.com )

  2. Preface 海纳百川,有容乃大 • First Things First • Essence about Bilingual education • Arrangements and requirements

  3. Essence about bilingual education • 1.1 Purpose of bilingual education • 1.2 Difficulty faced • 1.3 Misunderstanding available • 1.4 Essence about bilingual education

  4. 1.1 Purpose of bilingual education (bilingual:1 of ,containing, or expressed in two language, 2 able to speak two language equally well.) • To satisfy the need of educational authority. • Import advanced textbooks from industrialized countries; keep our textbooks’ pace with international ones.

  5. 1.2 Difficulty faced • To teacher • Selection of textbook(★★) • Giving lecture(★) • And speak English(★★★★) • To student • New knowledge itself(★)、Professional terms(★★)、Reading comprehension(long complex sentences 、special phrases★★),listening to teacher’s speaking(★★)

  6. 1.3 Misunderstanding available • Should teacher give lecture completely or most of the time in English? • Does the students acquired the requirements to read and listen ?

  7. 1.4 Essence about bilingual education • The nature of bilingual education is also to initiate students some knowledge、 cultivate their creative thinking and improve their ability to deal with new problems • Traditional cultural legacy should be inherited and English should be treated only just as a kind of tool.

  8. …satisfying details may we enjoy in learning scientifically English

  9. Why, you may wonder, should spiders be our friends? Because they destroy so many insects, and insects include some of the greatest enemies of the human race. Insects would make it impossible for us to live in the world; they would devour all our crops and kill our flocks and herds, if it were not for the protection we get from insect-eating animals. We owe a lot to the birds and beasts who eat insects but all of them put together kill only a fraction of the number destroyed by spiders. Moreover, unlike some of the other insect eaters, spiders never do the least harm to us or our belongings… 注释: devour :贪婪的吃(尽);Flocks,herds: 均指,畜群;

  10. And then the storm burst, Okonkwo, who had been walking about aimlessly in his compound in suppressed anger, suddenly found an outlet. • “who killed this banana tree?” • A hush fell on the compound immediately. • “who killed this tree? Or are you all deaf and dumb?” • As a matter of fact the tree is very much alive. Okonkwo’s second wife had merely cut a few leaves off it to wrap some food, and she said so .without further argument Okonkwo gave her a sound beating and left her and her only daughter weeping… His anger thus satisfied ,Okonkwo decided to go out hunting.

  11. …Each peptide bond has some double-bond character due to resonance(共享)and cannot rotate. • (b) Three bonds separate sequential carbons in a polypeptide chain1. The N-Cα and Cα-C bonds can rotate, with bond angles designated …respectively. The peptide C-N bond is not free to rotate. Other single bonds in the backbone may also be rotationally hindered, depending on the size and charge of the R groups …As one looks out from the α carbon, the φ and ψ angles increase as the carbonyl or amide nitrogens (respectively) rotate clockwise. 注释:1(本图示)一段肽链中,相邻碳原子间的三个键。peptide bond:肽键, Designated:标注(为) Hinder: 妨碍,受阻。 Clockwise:顺时针。

  12. If you don't live in tomorrow today… • If you don't live in tomorrow today, you will live in yesterday tomorrow! • We all should always keep our future in mind, or become future-oriented, make plans for our future, make efforts for tomorrow, make preparations for things to come, and we will of course achieve a lot. • Otherwise, we will have achieved little when we get old when it is too late to get started with anything. Then the only thing we can do is to look back or live in our memories of the old days…

  13. Arrangements and requirements

  14. Arrangement • Lectures (51 hours) • Laboratory practices (30 hours) • Mini-tests (2 times) • Open-laboratory practices (3) • Discussion sections(?)

  15. Requirements • Lecture attending • Term paper and homework • Experiment attending and experimental paper • Don’t cheat • Pass the exams

  16. A very effective study technique to you Read Revise Record Question SQ4R Technique Survey Review 请参考教材结构版块说明。

  25. 书籍是人类进步的阶梯: 海纳百川,有容乃大。 • Books are carriers of civilization. Without books , history is silent, literature dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at a standstill. They are engines of change, windows on the world, lighthouse erected in a sea of time. • -- Barbara Tuchman cripple 使跛,陷于瘫痪 Erect矗立 speculation 思索
