  1. Resume building Business Technology Applications Mrs. Jefcoat

  2. What is a Resume? • A brief document that summarizes your education, employment history, and experiences that are relevant to your qualifications for a particular job for which you are applying. • The purpose of a resume (along with your cover letter) is to get an interview. • Needs to be persuasive and perfect.

  3. The professional look of a resume • Your resume must be professional in order for you to be taken seriously. • No graphics • No crazy font • Simple is better • Use black ink only

  4. Format • Each section of a resume is a snapshot • Do not write out long paragraphs—actually should be short fragmented sentences

  5. Resume Sections • Contact Information • Career Objective • Educational Background • Licenses/Certifications • Work Experience • Community and Professional Involvement • Awards & Honors • Interests and Hobbies

  6. Contact Information Section • This is the easiest of all the sections to write. • Unlike other sections, this section will NOT have a heading on your resume. • It is the very 1st thing on your resume. • What information will be in the contact section? • Your full name • Your address • your phone number(s) • Your e-mail address

  7. Section 2- Objective • If you are trying to get a job—it will be your career objective. What type of job do you want? What is it your are applying for????? • It does have a heading. • It is the 2nd section of the resume. • Example—my career objective • To obtain a business education teaching position in a public school system. To bring almost thirteen years experience from the business world to the classroom, with real life situations, skills, knowledge, and experiences. To instill values and skills in students they will need to be successful. To help each student reach their full potential.

  8. Section- Educational Background • Does have a heading • Tells where you went to school and the years you attended. • (if you are obtaining an advanced diploma—put that information here) • Tells if you are currently enrolled in school.

  9. Licenses or Certifications • This would be where you would list any special licenses you have or certifications. • Majority of you will not have anything here to put yet. • If you do have or obtain any licenses or certifications—this is a major plus for an employer to see. • Example- CPR certified, IC3 certified, etc. • If you do not have any licenses or certifications—you will simply leave this portion off of your resume.

  10. Work Experience • You list your work experience. • Start with the most present and go backwards. • List the time frame you worked. • Duties you were responsible for completing. • Example • Financial Advisor- Wells Fargo Advisors • October 1998 through July 2010 • Duties include retirement planning, etc……

  11. Community and Professional Involvement • This could be community / school involvement. • Later on in life it would be community and professional association involvement.

  12. Awards and Honors • This is your time to brag about yourself. • List any honors or awards you have received.

  13. Interests and Hobbies • Keep this brief and simple. • This is just to let them know a few personal tidbits about you. • It is a good idea to put things that will reflect well on you. • Example: reading, etc. (if you like those things)

  14. Honesty is the best policy!!!!!!! • Do not put false information on any resume or job application. • Employer could terminate(fire) you for providing false information.

  15. Resume Building Summary • Purpose is to obtain an interview • Keep it professional---No graphics / crazy font / color • Follow the section format • Contact Information • Objective • Educational Background • Licenses/ Certifications • Work Experience • Community and Professional involvement • Awards and honors • Interests /Hobbies • Honesty is the best policy!
