What are our aims? • 80%Patients who have self harmed receive psychiatric assessment • >80% Emergency Staff trained in self harm • 10% reduction in the incidence of repeat self-harm in Bristol • Reduced prescriptions of drugs with high lethality when taken in overdose • 50% reduced admission to a hospital bed for self-harm • 20% reduced admission to intensive care of self-harm patients • 10% reduced length of stay in hospital if self harm patient admitted • 20% reduction in suicides in Bristol by those who self harm • Quality objectives: reduce duplication, CQC/NICE compliance, patient satisfaction

  4. That was then: Patient attends ED (A+E) at 7pm following overdose of prescription medication: Poor attitudes Left alone – DNW/absconding risk No mental health assessment No follow-up #BHPhitconf

  5. This is now: • Trained GP aware of local services • Prescription pilot • Ambulance crew with training to recognise self harm and mental health crisis • At reception ‘its personal’ • All attendances recorded – 40 item data set • Patient written resource pack #BHPhitconf

This is now • Personal Support Plan if been in before • Triage nurses and ED doctors trained in mental health • Psychiatric staff available 7 days per week • Able to be involved in research • The HOPE project – extra help for people with financial problems prior to self harm • GP specific box information #BHPhitconf

The Future’s Bright: • Training and extra support into AMU/OPAU • Later life (over 65) extra support 12 month pilot • Volunteers into ED (A+E) • NHS England – prescription into parliament • Psychiatric Nurses into GP surgeries: pilot • Update patient evaluation – what do people think now? • Evaluation – new service and 12 month later life service • Research – PPI self harm involvement: CLARHC #BHPhitconf
