Writing a Stellar Personal Statement Upward Bound Senior Seminar 2011
Brainstorming • Ask for Help from Parents, Friends, Teachers, or Tutors • Consider your Childhood • Consider your Role Models • Read Sample Admissions Essays • Goal Determination
Choosing a Topic • Can you provide vivid personal experiences? • Will your topic only repeat information that is found elsewhere? • Can you keep the reader interested? • Will your topic turn off a large number of people? • Will an admissions officer remember your essay after reading through hundreds of other essays?
Focus on Personal Qualities • How have you overcome adversity? • What personal characteristics make you a good candidate for higher education? • Don’t mention weaknesses (unless absolutely necessary). • Be HONEST
Tips for Writing a Stellar Essay • Be original • Be yourself • Don’t use big words unless you can use them correctly • Use clear vivid examples • Hook the reader with your introduction • The body of your essay should relate to the introduction • Use transitions • The conclusion is your last chance to impress the reader • Give your draft to others • Revise, Revise, Revise
You are not done yet! • Your personal statement will be proofed and revised multiple times. • Ask teachers and tutors to read your personal statement and provide constructive feedback. • Only when your tutor and I OK your personal statement will you be done!
