  1. Welcome to Second Grade! Mrs. Postma & Mr. Orcutt 2013-2014

Daily Schedule • Specials/Conference Period 8:30– 9:15 Mon. - Thurs. 2:00-3:00 Fri (specials, no conference) **Fridays - no conference period due to PLC, “Professional Learning Community” • Attendance is very important! For every 4th tardy conduct grade will be reduced. • Class begins at 8:00 • Tardy bell rings at 8:20

  3. Lunch Accounts are accessible online at www.paypams.com When lunch envelopes come home please send money with your child to replenish their account. Please make sure your child knows their pin number for their lunch account.

  4. Behavior Plan • Tickets -Positive behavior earns your child tickets that they can use to buy rewards. • Nurtured Heart Approach: • 1. Lots of positive praises • 2. Enforce rules strictly • 3. Avoid giving energy to negativity • Not following classroom/school procedures and homework requirements will result in their conduct grade being adjusted accordingly. • *Wednesday folders will document behavior infractions . Please discuss these infractions with your child so that they can work on correcting their behavior. • .

  6. Homework • Students should read at least 15 minutes every night. Books can be read with someone or independently. • Spelling words are assigned on Mondays and tests are given on Fridays. STUDY! • Choice boards are given Monday and due Friday. • Math Fact Fluency will be given on Monday and needs to be returned on Fridays signed. • Daily Math homework is due the following day unless otherwise noted.

  7. GRADING GUIDELINES • Major grades-50% • Minor grades-40% • Homework-10% • Reading-3 major/8 minor • Language-3 major/5 minor • Social Studies-3 major/6 minor • Math- 3 major/9 minor • Science-3 major/6 minor

  8. Parent Connection • Your child’s grades will be available to you online so you can monitor their progress weekly. • Parents can set up grade triggers to notify them if grade drops below parent set expectations. • Grades will be updated weekly. • www.kleinisd.net

  9. What Does an End of the Year Second Grader Look Like? READING • Reads on a level L or M book with a fluency rate of 90 wpm with comprehension • Writes complete sentences using correct punctuation. • Can write a meaningful story that has details, correct grammar, and is sequenced. • My goal for your child is to make one year’s grade level growth in reading.

MATH (these are some Not all) • Recalling Basic Facts to add/subtract with automaticity • Multiple Step Word Problems • Adding/Subtracting to the thousands place with regrouping • Multiplication Meaning • Telling time to the minute • Counting a collection of coins • Shapes and their attributes • Graphing

  11. Book Orders • Scholastic books is the cheapest way to order books. • Mr. Orcutt’s class does Scholastic Orders Online. See website for details. • Mrs. Postma’s class will bring orders in with checks. Mrs. Postma will then mail the order in.

  12. Family Participation • Please plan to get involved in our classroom this year! • Studies show that students are much more successful when their families are involved with their teacher to create a team atmosphere! • Volunteers must complete a background check!

  13. Other Information • Students need to know their address, phone number, parent’s names, and birthday. • Students need to know their car rider number (this helps expedite car rider lines) • Students need to know how to use seatbelts (This helps expedite car rider lines) • Students need to know how to open milk cartons, juice boxes, snack items, etc. • Changes in transportation-- Please call the • office or send a note with your child.
