  2. A regional airport can be a major staple in any area. It can provide access to commuter, cargo and personal aircraft, allowing for an easier connection to a major airport. Monterey, CA is located on the coast of California between San Francisco and Los Angeles. It is home to many wonderful attractions, including Pebble Beach Golf course, the Presidio of Monterey, and a regional airport that was constructed in the 1930s. Does the location of Monterey’s current Regional airport meet the needs and criteria of the city today? Overview The placement of an airport is a major undertaking with many factors influencing this decision. The amount of land needed for a regional airport can range from .75 to 1.5 square miles! Today we will look at land suitability from only a few of these factors.

  3. Open Land within 10 miles of Monterey, CA • Near Road Network • Flat Terrain, preferably without nearby obstructions • Distance from Residential Areas Criteria

  4. Road Network Information- City of Monterey • Elevation Data- United States Geological Survey • Land Use/Land Cover- United States Geological Survey • City Boundary Information- City of Monterey Data and Sources

  5. Contributory Approach • For Each Layer, Values are reclassified in terms of Suitability • Each Suitability layer has equal weight • Overall Suitability will be converted to a suitability percentage Methods

  19. The current location of Monterey Regional Airport does NOT meet the criteria standards outlined, due to its proximity to high intensity residential and commercial areas. In fact….. Results- Suitability of Actual Airport The city has grown so much since the airport’s construction that it now encompasses the airport!
