Long Distance IP/WDM • Cost of fiber and wavelengths is very high • Majority of network cost is in fiber plant • Electronics is used for multiplexing signals to minimize fiber requirements • Doubtful a network element will have 10 Gb/s demand to a foreign network element • SONET multiplexer will still be used to raise data rate even with IP/WDM • IP/WDM should employ SONET for layer 2 to remain compatible with SONET and enable multiplexing to higher rates • Some equipment may directly interface with WDM, depending on cost

Metropolitan IP/WDM • Distance are short - on the order of 10-20 km. • Rates between switches are on the order of DS3 or OC3 • SONET commonly used for electrical multiplexing • WDM direct interface is economic at OC12 levels today, OC3 in the future • Many inexpensive wavelengths will relatively low data rates • WDM provides wavelength protection • IP/WDM will still use SONET to remain compatible with existing equipment
