Exploring Multiple Sexual Partnerships for HIV Prevention: Zimbabwe's Innovative Data Collection Methods

This study addresses the challenge of under-reported multiple sexual partnerships (MCP) in Zimbabwe by implementing alternative data collection methods to inform HIV prevention programming. While cohort studies linked MCP to HIV infection, national data suggested low MCP levels. Through a bio-behavioural survey and rapid assessments in various districts, higher MCP rates were revealed, leading to the establishment of national program targets and interventions based on community perceptions and behavior change theory. The successful scaling up of the program was documented in the evaluation at AIDS 2010, showcasing the impact of addressing MCP on HIV prevention in Zimbabwe.

  1. Multiple Sexual Partnerships in the Context of HIV Prevention:Alternative Methods to Gather Evidence for Programming Around an Under-reported Issue

  2. What was the challenge? • Cohort studies conducted in some parts of Zimbabwe found association between multiple sexual partnerships and HIV infection • Qualitative /anecdotal evidence of multiple partnerships including concurrency • BUT: National DHS 2005 data showing relatively low levels of multiple sexual partnerships • Leading to questions: • Are MCP a key issue to address nationally? • If yes, what can be the objectives & targets for a national programme? • What drives MCP?

  3. What was done? • Bio-behavioural baseline survey (n=4,879) in 16 districts of Zimbabwe using Audio Computer-Assisted Self-Interview (ACASI) • Rapid assessments in 26 districts including 104 focus group discussions with adult men, adult women, young men, young women

  4. What was the result? • Higher levels of multiple partnerships reported in the NBCS baseline using a self-administered method as compared to DHS • Disaggregated data on prevalence of different forms of multiple partnerships • Targets for national program set • Perceived reasons of MCP and related norms established • Developed interventions considering community perceptions on MCP in addition to theory-driven approach (knowledge, risk perception, self-efficacy, social norms) • National program scaled up!
