  2. Opposition Grows • Increased excitement over Jesus also leads to increased antagonism of opponents, Mark 6:53-56; 7:1-2 • Conflict between human religious traditions and God’s commands • The sins of binding human traditions • Respect for God’s commands

  3. Matthew 15:1-14 The sins of Honoring Human Traditions

  4. Tradition • Doctrine and practice that is handed down • Human: From man to man through men, Mk 7:13; Matt 7:29 • Divine: From God to man through inspired men, 2 Ths 2:15; 3:4 (1 Cor 14:37)

  5. Demanding Traditions be Kept Although God has not Bound S I N • Conformity demanded for approval • Washings, Matt 15:2 (“Fault”, Mk 7:2) • Accept and bind with power (as if it were from God), Mark 7:2-5 (4), 8 • Human tradition approves binding where God gives liberty, Rom 14:3-8; Heb 13:9 • Based on human reasoning, Mk 7:2, 4 • Defiled = Unwashed … “Hold”

  6. Demanding Traditions be Kept Although God has not Bound S I N • Circumcision for salvation, Acts 15:1 • Prayer language (“thee”, “thou”) • One container for the Lord’s Supper • Baptism formula (Matt 28:19) • Race to the courthouse • Must state cause in the divorce decree • Extremism that rushes to condemn all who don’t conform, Phil 3:2; Matt 23:15

  7. Diminishes the Importance of God’s Commands (Matt 15:3-6) S I N • Marked by zeal, Gal 1:14 • Zeal without knowledge, Rom 10:2; Matt 15:4-5 (6) • Transgresses and rejects God’s commands, Matt 15:3; Mk 7:8-9 • Elevates man above God • Renders God’s command “of no effect” (void), Matt 15:6

  8. Born of Pride, it Breeds Hypocrisy (Matt 15:3, 7-9) S I N • Arrogance of elevating human will above God’s will • Reveals a heart that is far from God • Hypocrisy: Pretense; play acting • Pretending to be for God but denying Him, Matt 23:3 • For the sake of appearance, Matt 23:14

  9. Offended by Bold Preaching that Exposes its Sin (Matt 15:12-14) S I N • Boldness is needed to make the gospel known, Eph 6:19-20; 2 Cor 3:12 • Truth conflicts with human traditions • Must speak truth, Acts 13:44-46; 20:20, 27; Col 2:8, 20-23 • When truth offends, the problem lies with the one who is offended – not with the truth of God! Jno 6:60-62

  10. It Blinds and Hardens Hearts to the Truth (Matt 15:13-14) S I N • Invariably, those who bind human traditions think they have true spiritual insight, Jno 9:40-41 • “We know…”, Jno 9:24 • Clung to their tradition (that Jesus broke) in spite of the evidence for Him, Jno 9:14 • Refusal to be taught keeps one blinded in sin and lost, Jno 9:29-34

  11. Matthew 15:15-20 Obeying the Commands of God

  12. Requires a Sincere, Genuine Heart (Matt 15:8) OBEY • Hear and understand, Matt 15:10 • What comes out of the mouth defiles, Matt 15:11 • Because it comes from heart, 15:17-18 • Sincere heart does not fight against what God says, 15:5-6 • God did not plant human tradition, 15:13 • “What does the Scripture say?”

  13. Requires Fearing God more than People (Matt 10:28) OBEY • Impartial God does not prefer one human tradition over another • He rejects them all as affecting salvation! Acts 10:34-35 (11:2-3) • God demands that all fear and obey His tradition—revealed truth! (Acts 11:17)

  14. Knows Defilement Begins in the Heart (Matt 15:15-20) OBEY • Evil thoughts, evil motives and evil lusts form the basis of outward sins • Sin begins in the heart, therefore, the heart must be cleansed, Matt 23:25-26; Rom 6:12-18 • Obey God from the heart, Matt 22:37

  15. Matthew 15:1-20 Defiled hearts cling to and demand compliance to human traditions at the expense of God’s commands Hearts fully given to God will carefully follow the doctrine of Christ with a pure heart, 2 Tim 3:10; 1 Tim 4:6
