  1. An Architecture for Energy Savings Stephen Wolff Cisco Systems

  2. Being green • Smart grid • Generation • Traditional (bulk, point) • Distributed • Transmission/distribution • Smart load • Commercial and public-sector • Residential

  3. Buildings consume 50% of world’s energy Buildings 50% Transportation 25% Manufacturing 25% Sources: BOMA 2006, EIA 2006, AIA 2006

  4. Office Building Loads IT Equipment 25% Lighting 11% Other 6% Heating, Cooling, and Ventilation 58% Source: UK Energy Efficiency Best Practice Program; Energy Consumption Guide 19: Energy Use in Offices “It takes twice as much energy to remove the heat generated … as it takes to run the equipment.” • UK Department of the Environment, • Good Practice Guide 118

  5. Cisco EnergyWise • Individual elements of an IT installation can be controlled individually, but a systems approach is likely to be more productive • IT devices are interconnected by a network, so it is not unreasonable to embed system-wide energy-control intelligence into the network elements themselves • Cisco EnergyWise comprises additions to IOS and the CLI that enable energy management

  6. Flexibility • Devices – • are assigned to domains • have names and roles • may have keywords stored in them • may have an importance (0-100) assigned to them • EnergyWise commands can use these attributes

  7. Cisco EnergyWisePhased Development Phase 3 Phase 2 Enhanced Building Control Phase 1 IT Control Network Control Non-PoE Devices (PCs) Partner IT Power Mgmt Enhanced Management Building Automation Control Partner Building Power Mgmt Enhanced Management (SDK+) PoE Devices Power Levels, Policies Discovery, Mgmt, Reporting

  8. EnergyWise Phase 1 • Management of PoEdevices • Wireless APs • IP phones • Open API and SDK available • Cisco Developer Network

  9. EnergyWise Phase 2 • Control of non-PoE devices with SNMP • ‘Orchestrator’ module to manage PCs • Wake-on-LAN feature for PCs connected through IP phones
