  3. Minimum Hardware Requirements for XP • 233 MHz Pentium CPU (300 MHz) • 128 MB RAM (256 MB) • 2GB Hard Drive w/ 650 MB avail. (2 GB available) • Optical Drive • Keyboard & Mouse • Video adapter supporting 800X600 • Sound card, speakers or headphones

XP Installation Types • Clean Install – Format the hard drive, install everything new. • Upgrade Install – Change Windows System files to XP versions, leave user's files and the Registry intact. • Can't upgrade from Windows95 • Dual-Boot Install – Install XP to a separate disk partition. Leaves old Windows intact. Lets user select version of Windows to boot.

XP Recovery Console • Booting off the Windows CD can also give you the option of repairing a damaged XP installation with the use of the Recovery Console, a text mode program that gives you access to a version of the Command Prompt. • You must know the Administrator's password to use Recovery Console. (No one remembers the Administrator's password.)

  6. 5 Stages of an Install • Driver loading • File Copy • Text Mode Setup (also, selecting and formatting a partition, if necessary.) • GUI Mode Setup (Regional settings, computer name, admin password.) • Welcome (Creating user accounts.)

Remote Desktop • Allows a Remote computer to be controlled by a Client computer. • Most useful for IT troubleshooting on a corporate network. • The Remote computer must authorize being controlled, and must have a PUBLIC IP address. • Most home computers are behind a router and don’t present a public IP, generally, you can't control your home computer from your office computer.

Automatic Updates • Microsoft issues security and other updates periodically (about once a month). • Four setup choices • Download and install automatically. • Download, but don’t install until told. • Notify about updates, but don’t download until told. • Turn off completely. • The first choice is the default.

  10. System Restore • Allows user to return System State (Registry) to an earlier time. • Useful when a hardware or software installation has caused a problem in the system. • Can be useful when a virus has infected the system, if you know the approximate date you were infected. • Windows creates system checkpoints automatically. Restore points can also be created manually.

  11. Fast User Switching • Can switch from one user to another without logging off and on. • Originally intended for home use, but is available (and is the default) in XP Pro. • Cannot be used if the computer logs on to a domain account.

  12. Windows Vista • Released to the public in January, 2007. • Four versions • Home Basic ( $200/$90 ) • Home Premium ( $260/$200 ) • Business ( $300/$200 ) • Ultimate ( $320/$300 )

  15. Flip Flip is the replacement for the "Alt+Tab Task Switcher". Hold down the Alt key and repeatedly hit Tab to cycle through all open programs. Displays a live thumbnail of the application instead of a generic icon, to help you select the correct window. Release the Alt key to select the currently selected window.

  16. Flip 3D Also helps you choose one of the currently open windows, but uses the Windows key instead of Alt. Creates a 3D "rolodex" of live views of open applications, approximately 1/3 of full size. Used when Flip's thumbnails aren't large enough to find the window you want.

  17. Pervasive Search Almost every window that displays a list of some kind has a Search box. Typing a few characters of the file name or program name will narrow the list to matching entries. Particularly helpful on the "Start" menu.

  18. Saved Searches Save the criteria of a search to be able to execute the search at a later time. Has the effect of creating "Virtual Folders." It is no longer important to remember where you saved a file.

  19. Drive Imaging Previous versions of Windows had built-in file backup, but Vista adds "Full Computer Backup", taking a snapshot of you hard drive and storing it in a file on an external drive or a network drive. Allows you to quickly recover from a catastrophic failure.
