  2. The GARUDA National Grid Initiative • Coordinated by CDAC • Which is also responsible for Indian Grid Certification Authority • Aggregates heterogeneous and distributed resources across India • Operating since 2004 • Now entered phase 3: Operational phase • Underlying network provided now by NKN

  3. Worldwide LHC Computing Grid in India • CMS TIER2 centre TIFR Mumbai • ALICE TIER2 centre Saha-VECC Kolkata

  4. The National Knowledge Network Project • The objective of the National Knowledge Network is to bring together all the stakeholders in Science, Technology, Higher Education, Research and Development, GRID Computing, governance with speeds scalable eventually up to the order of 10s of gigabits per second coupled with extremely low latencies. • NKN will interconnect all the research, higher education and scientific institutions in the country, over a period of three years. • The joint proposal for the establishment of NKN was initiated by the PSA’s Office and the National Knowledge Commission and then taken up by the Department of IT.

  5. Synergy • Cooperation among the main actors • NKN provides the network infrastructure both for GARUDA and LCG- India • International High speed links connected to NKN • Global vision • Close cooperation with the EU-IndiaGrid2 project and strong involvement of EU-IndiaGrid2 partners

  6. EU-IndiaGrid2 main objectives • Consolidate & Enhance cooperation between European and Indian e-Infrastructures for the benefit of EU-Indian collaboration in e-Science • Support specific user communities in the exploitation of grid infrastructure in areas strategic for EU-Indian collaboration • Ensure a sustainable approach to e-Infrastructures across Europe and India through dissemination actions, meetings & workshops • Foster and Enhance cooperation with other European Initiatives in the Asian region and worldwide

  10. Visit of European e-Infrastructure Delegation to India FourObjectives • high-level EU-INDIA Workshop on Research Infrastructures; • Launch of India's full participation in TEIN3 and its high-speed international linking • meetings with key e-infrastructure stakeholders in India (e.g. ERNET, NKN, TIFR); • Launch of the EU-IndiaGrid2 action.

  11. India-EU Thematic Workshop on Research Infrastructures • Delhi January 2010 – coincident with EU-IndiaGrid2 Launch • co-sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology - Government of India and the European Commission • Participation of ESFRI Projects and main e-Infrastructures initiatives (EGEE/EGI,PRACE, TEIN3, EU-IndiaGrid2) • to compare approaches regarding e-Infrastructures in India and in Europe and build on commonalities

  12. Cooperation on e-Infrastructures in Asia Pacific EU-IndiaGrid2 is eager to cooperate with EGI, EUAsiaGRID and the other projects active in the Asia-Pacific area in order to exploit the opportunities given by TEIN3 with the opening of 2.5 Gb links from India to Europe and to Singapore.
