Sonnets are a revered literary form consisting of 14 lines, predominantly composed in iambic pentameter. The two main types are the Petrarchan and Shakespearean sonnets. The Petrarchan sonnet is divided into an octave (8 lines) with an ABBAABBA rhyme scheme and a sestet (6 lines) with varying patterns, often presenting a problem in the octave that the sestet resolves. The Shakespearean sonnet features three quatrains and a final couplet, following an ABABCDCDEFEGG rhyme scheme, typically addressing a conflict and offering a resolution in the couplet.
