  1. The Lord of Human History Romans 11:25-36

  2. My Objective See God as the Lord of Human History (which should): • Increase your faith in the reliability of His promises • Minimize human pride in the church • Magnify the magnificence of His Mercy • Promote white-hot worship of our Lord

  3. Question Why would it be good to establish God’s Sovereignty over Human History?

  4. Last Week 4000 Years Ago • Romans 11 • God has made a “people and land” promise to Abraham and He is still fulfilling that promise in part through the body of Christ Verse 25

  5. Romans 11:26 Quoted from Isaiah 59:20-21 • And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness [no God] from Jacob:

  6. Mount Zion The Deliver Comes from Zion According to Hebrews 12:22 • Mount Zion • the heavenly Jerusalem • the city of the living God

  7. The Essence of What is Needed • Romans 11:27 • For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins. See 2 Corinthians 5:21

  8. Gospel vs. Election Romans 11:28 • As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: How can someone be an enemy to a message?

  9. Gospel vs. Election Romans 11:28 (KJV) • As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: • but as touching the election, they are beloved for the [fore]fathers’ sakes. • Abraham, Isaac, Jacob

  10. Romans 11:29 • For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance [irrevocable]. • What gift? • What calling? God doesn’t change His Mind about the gifts He gives and who He calls.

  11. Gift and Calling • Romans 6:23 • For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. • Romans 9:24 • Even us, whom he [God] hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?

  12. God’s gift of Eternal Life Is Irrevocable! It can’t be revoked.

  13. Therefore, the issue is NOT can I lose my salvation. The issue is have I been called by God into faith in Jesus Christ.

  14. Compare Romans 11:28-29 (Paul) to 2 Peter 2:10 (Peter)

  15. Paul • As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes. For the gifts and calling of Godare without repentance. Peter • Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

  16. Romans 11:30-31 • For as ye [Gentiles] in times past have not believed God, • yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief: • Even so have these [Israelites] also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy.

  17. Romans 11:32 • For God hath concluded [consigned] them all in unbelief, • Corporately • Initially the Gentiles • Then the Israelites Individually ALL

  18. How does God do such things? Turn Genesis 11

  19. Question Is God, then, the author of sin?

  20. Is God the author of sin? NO • James 1:13 (KJV) • Let no man say when he is tempted, • I am tempted of God: • for God cannot be tempted with evil, • neither tempteth he any man:

  21. Psalm 5:4-5 • For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee. • The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: • thou hatest all workers of iniquity. God is Love (1 John 2:8)

  22. Hosea 9:15 • All their wickedness is in Gilgal: for there I hated them: • for the wickedness of their doings I will drive them out of mine house, • I will love them no more: all their princes arerevolters.

  23. Who could fathom a “God” who loves Hitler. God loves perfectly. God hates perfectly.

  24. Look Back at Romans 11:22

  25. Romans 11:22 • Behold [consider] therefore the goodness [kindness] and severity of God: • on them which fell, severity; • but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: • otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

  26. Great Question Why did God permit Adam to sin?

  27. Commentary “God allowed man to pursue his sinful inclinations so that he could receive glory by demonstrating His grace and mercy to disobedient sinners.” MacArthur Proof Passage

  28. Goodness • Love • Mercy • Grace • Severity • Hate • Wrath • Justice With the Cross in Mind Let’s Look at Ephesians 2:1-9

  29. Paul is SHOWING Us • Stages/Periods (of Human History) • The Time of Gentile Disobedience • The Time of Jewish Disobedience • The Fullness of the Gentiles • The Time for Mercy for Israel

  30. Look at Romans 11:32 Someone asks: “Where did Paul come up with a notion of a God this involved in the affairs of man?”

  31. Answer The Hebrew Bible Our OT is Paul’s Bible

  32. Daniel 2:21 • And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: • he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:

  33. Daniel 4:17 • This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.

  34. Daniel 4:35 • And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

  35. Isaiah 46:8a-9 • Remember this….(vs. 8) • Remember the former things of old: • for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Compare to Romans 11:33-36

  36. Isaiah 46:10 • [God] Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, • My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

  37. Isaiah 46:11 • Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man (Cyrus) that executeth my counsel from a far country: • yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.

  38. Isaiah 46:12 • Hearken unto me, ye stouthearted, • [Listen to Me ye hardhearted] • that are far from righteousness: • [sinners] Looked at this description of Israel before they are consigned to disobedience.

  39. Isaiah 46:13 • I bring near my righteousness; it shall not be far off, and my salvation shall not tarry: and I will place salvation in [earthly] Zion for Israel my glory. Here 700 years before Christ is a promise from God about salvation in Zion (Jerusalem) for Israel.

  40. Same Message Different Time Isaiah 46:13 (today) • God has brought His righteousness in Christ near (in this sanctuary) and His salvation will not remain forever; and God has placed salvation in the church for Gentiles the Bride of Christ.
