  4. America’s Democratic Roots • Virginia’s Colonial Legislature- • House of Burgesses-1619 • America’s 1st Representative Government- Citizens elect others to run the government.

  5. America’s Democratic Roots • 1620-The Mayflower landed in Mass. • No controlling authority existed • The Pilgrims signed a Social Contract-people give power to government w/their approval or • CONSENT OF THE GOVERNED
