  2. I will cover: • A little about the Winspear Business Library • Internet vs. Library, pros and cons- why we need both • Where to find resources/articles for your projects • How to search for them to get the best possible results • Citation tools

The Library… • WinspearBusiness Library • It has the largest collection of business databases in Canada and the second best collection in North America • Identical access as Fortune 500 & Wall Street firms • Library guides for courses and subjects • Physical space has study carrels, computers, printing, scanner, meeting rooms with Smart boards • Very knowledgeable and helpful staff • You can email questions or book an appointment with a librarian for help

  4. Internet Pros • Easily accessible, 24 hours a day • Convenient, can search it from anywhere • So much information! • Multimedia component • Websites are updated for most current information

Internet Cons • No system that organizes masses of information • ANYONE can publish a website • Websites can disappear • Reliability/accuracy of information not guaranteed- no reviewing process • Different search engines give different results • Sometimes you have to pay for information • No one to guide you in your search

Library Pros • Has an organizational system for information • Has access to reviewed professional resources • FREE access as a student or staff member • Has print AND electronic resources- databases, e-books, e-journals • Can access from home with your CCID • Librarians are trained to help with navigating resources and finding information

  7. Library Cons • None….  • Not always as current as websites but much more reliable information and frequently updated

  8. Conclusion • We need both internet and libraries- both are evolving to meet new needs and technologies and can fill different research needs • For your assignments in this class you will need both- know how to use them

  9. Not sexy but useful: search strategies • Boolean operators • And • But • Or • “” • ? or * • Your toolkit to search any database, works for Google searches too

  10. And… • Use to focus and narrow, ONLY when both terms are present – to combine core concept terms Employment Recruitment

  11. Or • Use to broaden, when either or both terms are present- include synonyms, related words compensation salary

  12. Not • Use to exclude- when one term is not present MySpace Social networking

  13. Other ways… • ? *- wildcards- use to find alternative forms of a word (colo*r = colour, color)- • Reward*- (truncation) = reward, rewards, rewarding • “”- phrase searching– “work life balance”, “human resources management”

Scholarly articles • Written by academics, researchers, experts in their fieldsfor other experts • Published in academic journals; may be peer-reviewed • They report on original research projects; usually balanced and unbiased in their writing • Abstract at the beginning and references/bibliography at the end

Finding information: Where/how to start? • WinspearBusiness Library: HR Management Libguide, SMO 311 guide, SMO 416 (Performance Management and Rewards), Companies (Canadian) • The libguides can walk you through the most common resources for finding the information you need specifically for this class, plus citation help- the lists may seem overwhelming but the top 3 or 4 items are usually the best/most popular on the subject in question • Searching databases: best for HR articles- Business Source Complete, ABI Inform

Public vs. Private Companies • Public vs. Private- there is a difference Step 1- Company’s website • Investor relations, annual reports for stockholders, etc. “about us”- also good for company culture information Step 2- Search for company in SEDAR (Canada) “the official site that provides access to most public securities documents and information filed by public companies and investment funds with the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) in the SEDAR filing system.”

Company Information: Where to Start • Company website • Trade journals, magazines • Target members of a specific business, industry or organization • Written by HR practitioners or journalists • Often published by an association or organization • Current • Editorials/1st person • Newspaper articles Databases: Marketline Advantage, Sustainalytics

Articles in Newspapers and Journals: Databases • Browse newspaper headlines in CBCA Complete, Factiva, Press Display, or Canadian Newsstand • Search journal articles in ABI Inform, Business Source Complete For HR- Related information: • Human Resources Abstracts, Conference Board of Canada Useful Journals for HR: • Compensation & Benefits Review • Academy of Management Perspectives

  21. Citing Research • If you get ANYTHING from an outside source, you MUST cite it- including articles, websites, presentations, reports, interviews, etc. • If you do not cite it is called PLAGIARISM • PLAGIARISM=BAD • And there are ways your professors can check…
