  2. HISTORY (1906-1945) • Poland’s oldest university of economics • Founded 1906 by August Zieliński • Full academic rights granted 1919 • 1919 – 1939: 30 Ph.D. Titles awarded • Continued education during WWII

HISTORY (1945-1990) • 1950’s – 80’s: Educating staff for the centrallyplanned economy (renamed: Central School of Planning & Statistics) • 1950’s – 80’s: Despite obstacles „research schools” has been established. They were considered the avant-garde of economic thought. • Among the most famous were schools ofProf. Michal Kalecki, Prof. Aleksy Wakar and Prof. Oskar Lange • After 1989, SGH staff is leading the process of systemic transformation in Poland headed byProf. Leszek Balcerowicz – former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and later the President of the National Bank of Poland

  4. HISTORY (after 1991) • April 5, 1991 renamed back to Central School of Commerce (Szkoła Główna Handlowa). • Official translation: Warsaw School of Economics (SGH) • Reforms launched and international co-operation initiated in early 1990’s.

  5. STUDENTS • About 18,000 students in 2008/2009: • 6,928 full time • (incl. over 200 foreigners) • 3,653 extramural (part-time) • 7,178 postgraduate and PhD students • 2,270 graduates in 2007/2008 • Over 77,000 graduates to date

  12. RESEARCH SGH is a renowned research and expert centre in the field of economic sciences. Research studies carried out by our university staff are used by well- known companies, central and local government offices and international organisations. • Types of research conducted at SGH • contracted research studies corresponding to the needs of Polish economy and funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. • „tailor-made” expertises for different institutions and enterprises • publications, i.e. the annual „Poland, International Economic report” • research projects, with UNIDO, UN, Council of Europe, World Bank, OECD and many others • international projects within the 5th, 6th, and 7thFramework Programme

INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION • SGH maintains extensive foreign contacts with almost200 universities. • As a result the students have the opportunity to undertake studies in foreign languages and to obtain knowledge in specializations that are not well developed in Poland. • These contacts serve to expose students and faculty to the rapidly changing global economy.
