  1. Reflection Questions You will answer these questions BELOW the journal entry in today’s Google Doc: • Write down 3 specific phrases that show exaggeration. Use quotation marks and line numbers! • Example: “And so it piled up to the ceilings” (7) • Which word BEST describes the tone of the author’s words? • Angry • Confused • Humorous • Hardworking • Briefly explain why you chose that word to describe the tone. • What do you think the author wants his child or adolescent readers to learn from this poem?

Connecting to the world around us… • Yesterday, we read and discussed a very silly poem about a girl who did not want to take out the garbage. • Today we are going to take a more serious look at what happens to people who are surrounded by trash. • In a moment, you will be directed to carefullylook at some pictures of places in the world that do not have the same regulations for getting rid of garbage that we do. • My expectations for you are to be mature and quiet as you spend a few minutes looking at the pictures. • If you go to our class website, click on the link that is included with today’s date on the “Language Arts 7” page.

  3. Evaluating what you saw • Brainstorm THREE appropriate adjectives that would describe what you saw, or how you felt when you looked at these nine pictures (you can be honest, but please also be respectful!). • These should go in your Tri 2 Google Doc. • Today is Tues, 12/2

Annotating an article • A few weeks ago, when your teacher was not here, you were given an assignment to ANNOTATE an article. • That meant that you “marked it up” to show your active reading. • Some of you did this very well and it was easy to see your thought process while you were reading. • Others of you? Well…it was easy to see that your thoughts were not related to the article. • Take a minute to preview the symbols/ideas that you were given on the next slide.

  5. Remember these? • Y= Yes, I agree with this. This sounds about right. • N = No, I don’t agree with this. There is something wrong here. • F= I see a FACT here. • O= I see an OPINION here. • ! = Wow! I find this really surprising. • ?? = Huh? I am confused by this. • J= This is funny. • * = I bet that this is an important piece to remember. • W= This is weird, creepy, or unusual

  7. Check it out! • Your teacher is going to MODEL how this might look with the first few paragraphs of today’s article. • Feel free to make the same markings on your paper…IF they make sense to you! • Before we do that, however, WHY do teachers want you to make meaningful annotations?

(Hint: You might need to look at your answer from yesterday!) • How is the PURPOSE of this article similar or differentthan the poem we read yesterday?

  9. Think-Pair-Share What are areas in your life that you do a good job in watching the amount of garbage you create or resources you waste? What are areas in your life that you know you do NOT do a good job with these things. List 3 SPECFIFIC, PRACTICAL things you could do to lessen your garbage/wastefulness.
