While Bollywood has continued to rule the film market; regional cinema has witnessed significant growth Key Insights • Regional cinema has been witnessing a surge in investments from major film studios to tap the potential of underpenetrated markets • South Indian cinema dominates regional film industry • Major growth being witnessed in Marathi, Punjabi, Bhojpuri and Bengali cinema • Richer content as well as the increasing uptake of such movies by mainstream audiences, has attracted studios such as Eros, Disney and Reliance • Dubbed versions of popular Hollywood films also being released in regional languages • Multiplexes are increasing number of shows of regional movies • Some regional films have overtaken the collections of Hindi films in markets such as Australia, Canada and US • "I think regional cinema now has the money, and it also has much bolder themes, many more people willing to experiment,“ – Mahesh Manjrekar, a former Bollywood filmmaker who now directs Marathi films.

  5. Big studios continue to spend 20% of their budget in Regional Cinema Few Facts • Reliance Entertainment, Eros, Disney UTV, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, Fox Star Studios are looking aggressively at the regional cinema • Independent producers like Emmay Entertainment (Nikhil Advani) and Akshay Kumar and AshviniYardi's Grazing Goat Productions are also investing • About Rs 550-600 crore of investments is riding on about 20-30 films in Punjabi, Marathi, Bengali, Bhojpuri and four South Indian languages • Of 1,255 films released in the country in 2011, 1,035 were in regional languages, with an expected investment of Rs 1,500-2,000 crore •  Eros has invested close to Rs 150 crore across four to five regional languages Source: Economic Times May 2013

  6. Number of Punjabi movies being released every year has increased consistently • Release of Punjabi films has been on the rise year-on-year • The growth has been over 50% CAGR for the period 2011 to 2014 • Punjabi film fraternity is gaining tremendous acknowledgement by mainstream bollywood celebrities • In the recent scheduled PTC Film awards the likes of Dharmendra, Anil Kapoor, VivekOberoi were to be present. 7. This means continued demand of new skill set in the film industry at all levels • The rapid growth of new channels, new kinds of programming and new media has created an enormous demand for performing arts as well as professional skills essential for the growth of this sector. • There is limited capacity to meet this demand. Paucity of good teachers and trainers, lack of standardization of curriculum and training methodologies has resulted in mushrooming of micro-training academies • Consumer spending on Entertainment in India 2010 grew by 2.2%. • National Skills Development Corporation identifies the Media, Entertainment, Communication and Arts sector as one of the 15 strongest growth sectors in terms of man power requirement over the next 10 years. • India is largest producer of films in the world, producing more than 1,000 films each year, in all languages. Industry is estimated at INR 82,000 crore in 2012. • This sector is disorganized globally and creates an opportunity for a global brand to acquire significant markets This clearly brings-out a need for standardised and scalable academy to provide skilled talent to this ever growing industry

  8. Chandigarh has a very few acting academies to cater to ever growing popularity of Punjabi Cinema • Few institutes, in form of academy, theaters, university courses, have opened up in last decade to tap and groom the Punjabi Youth • They all lack the focus on practical aspect of acting • Most academies run their courses with the focus on Bollywood • These academies run a single center in one location • However, few challenges exist • Promotion of the academy itself is not the man focus • Quality of students do not match upto already over-crowded Bollywood industry • Leading to lack of opportunities and success stories for the academies
