Background Information • Author: Paul • Written approx 55 AD • Recipient: Corinthians were notorious for loose sexual standards and silent tolerance of incest, violations of charity, and abuses in the celebration of the Eucharist. • Situation: Paul wanted to challenge abuses in the community and question the Corinthian’s tolerance to crimes.

  3. Chapter 7 • Paul is stressed, exhausted and restless • Titus arrive with news of Corinthian repentance and Paul is overcome with joy

  4. Key Verse • "God, Who gives heart to those who are low in spirit, gave me strength." - 2 Corinthians 7:6 • Paul is saying here that seeing others given strength by God makes him happy and that it gives him strength. 

  5. Chapter 8 • Paul collects money from the Corinthians to feed the starving people in Jerusalem • He realizes the love of money is the root of their problems

  6. Key Verse • "Just as you are rich in every respect, in faith and discourse, in knowledge, in total concern, and in the love we bear you, so may you abound in this charity." - 2 Corinthians 8:7  • Paul is talking about how the Corinthians are given money and knowledge, and they should use them to help with charity. 

  7. Chapter 9 • Corinthians donate and get good results • Poor were helped • Corinthians rewarded • Prayers from Jerusalem

  8. Key Verse • "Let me say this much: He who sows sparingly will reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will reap bountifully." - 2 Corinthians 9:6 • In this quote, Paul is saying how whoever does good, will receive good. When the Corinthians donated to the starving Christians in Jerusalem, they received food and land and praise. 

  9. Chapter 10 • Corinthians criticize Paul for being bold in his letters but appearing weak in real life • Paul says his weapons are spiritual and strong against the devil

  10. Key Verse • “For it is not the one who recommends himself who is approved but the one whom the Lord recommends.” -2 Corinthians 10:18 • Paul writes that self-glorification is wrong, and is only a precursor to the Final Judgment.

  11. Chapter 11 • Paul fears that Corinthians will start to believe false preachers • Capitalizes that he has equal to knowledge to the original apostles

  12. Key Verse • "I am jealous of you with the jealousy of God Himself, since I have given you in marriage to one Husband, presenting you as a chaste virgin to Christ." —2 Corinthians 11:2 • Paul compares a relationship with Christ to marriage. He states that he has married the community to Christ, and they will be presented to him at his Second Coming.

  13. Chapter 12 • Paul boasts of God's revelations to him • He says that his revelations and sufferings show that he is a true apostle

  14. Key Verse • “And I will not be a burden, for I want not what is yours, but you. Children ought not save for their parents, but parents for their children.” -2 Corinthians 12:14 • Paul personifies the Corinthian community as his child. He states he does not want any money from them. He only wishes to reunite the community with God.

  15. Chapter 13 • Paul warns the Corinthians not to fall into a sinful state • He hopes they realize that God is within them. • "Test yourselves to see whether you are living in faith; examine yourselves. Perhaps you yourselves do not realize that Christ Jesus is in you." —2 Corinthians 13:5
