  3. Leavers Destinations 2011-2012 • Not yet published – date moved to June 2013 • Information is very positive • Figures indicate 2% improvement on last year • Less than 1% of our young people currently unemployed

  5. 16 PLUS Learning Choices • Every young person will be made an offer of continued learning, education or training • Every young person will receive information, advice and guidance at an appropriate level at the right time, especially young people contemplating leaving school

  6. 16 PLUS Learning Choices • Appropriate supports which meet the needs of those young people facing barriers to a successful transition will be agreed and put in place • Information on financial support to those most in need is accessible and coherent

  7. 16 PLUS Learning Choices • Employment/Training including Modern Apprenticeships – VERY limited opportunities in the current climate • Further Education – reduced number of courses • Early application to college – secured place and EDC permission required • School S5/S6 (including Senior Vocational)

  9. Opportunities are VERY limited School leavers in competition with other learners Entry requirements are greater and different Life experience and voluntary work in addition to above COLLEGE COURSES

  12. PROGRESSION AT SCHOOL – at present S3/S4 - 8 CERTIFICATE COURSES English Maths French Social Subject Science + 3 Others S5 - 5 NATIONAL QUALIFICATION COURSES English Maths + 3 Others + RE, PSE, PE S6 – minimum of 4 subjects

  17. AIMING HIGH IN S5/S6 • Correct pathway is crucial. “Trying it out” does not work in S5. • Fewer Highers does not necessarily improve the quality of grades

AIMING HIGH IN S5/S6 • Advanced Highers • Valuable qualification • Excellent preparation for higher education • Costly for staffing • each AH course costs 0.2 teacher • each S1 English class costs 0.2 teacher • Should have Highers for entry to Higher Education • Consider new H vs AH where appropriate
