  2. Learning outcome #1 “Summarize the historical roots of community development and organizing, advocacy, and social movements.”

  3. According to Homan, 2011 “Change can cause discomfort and provoke fear” (p.13). But without those who are willing to stand up and fight for what is right, we would not have things like equal rights today. This class taught me the importance of social change and the hardships of what it takes for people to stand up and fight for change and a good cause. I learned that change does not happen in a day and it takes time and persistence. I chose this picture because it reflects one of the biggest social movements in the history of our country. Social movements have made the world a better more diverse place to live in. Courtesy of Google (#1)

  4. Community development in the sense of advocating has been an essential part of what I have learned from outcome #1. I wrote a policy brief about Immigration Reform. From writing my policy brief I learned that advocating for a cause isn’t always the easiest thing. Advocating has been around for a very long time, some say since biblical times (Sargent, 2006). With that said, its obvious that advocating is an essential part for creating social change. Courtesy of Google (#2)

  5. In this class, I learned that peoples ability to self-organize is one of the most significant process to change there is (Wheatley & Frieze, 2011). Connecting people and creating more awareness will create an organized group of people with the same belief about what they want to change. I chose the picture of Martin Luther King because he created one of the most important and famous organized groups in the history of our country. Courtesy of Google (#3)

  6. This learning outcome had a lot to do about community change. I learned that most people assume that community change is a hard task to face. However, by utilizing the resources in your community and creating organized groups, it is possible to create change in the community you live in (Homan, 2011). It is up to every community member not to allow ignorance to keep problems alive, but allow yourself to fight to solve them. It is hard to change, and most of us build a resistance to change (Homan, 2011). I chose this picture because it symbolizes a diverse community standing together, in unity. That is what this learning outcome has taught me, we need to stand together to create change. Courtesy of Google (#4)

  7. Learning outcome #2 Analyze community systems and structures, and design and evaluate processes to initiate and sustain change through specific strategies, tactics, activities and social policy advocacy.

  8. To me, initiating change was one of the biggest topics of the whole quarter in this class. All the books we read where about change in some way and also writing the policy brief. I learned that initiating change is one of the hardest things that people can do. There are certain things people can do to help initiate change like, advocacy workand grassroots movements, lobbying, community development and organizing. I chose this picture because the fish is jumping to a new fish bowl. The gold fish is having to take a risk and go out of his comfort zone to initiate change. Courtesy of Google (#5)

  9. Once a group of people has initiated change, it is time to sustain it. I learned from this class that, in order to sustain the change, that there has to be a belief that people can change and society can change as a whole. I learned that it is important to understand the capacities, limitations, and resiliency of human systems to make change work. Courtesy of Google (#6)

  10. This learning concept has helped teach me that one must have a certain strategy and tactic to help undergo change. Certain strategies that I learned included, knowing and understanding the effect of policies and laws on a state and local and even national level to see the influence of delivery systems. Courtesy of Google (#7)

  11. This concept helped me learn that it is important to have a plan when wanting to execute a certain plan of change. Its imperative not to just jump in but to strategize and have a plan based off of certain tactics needed. There are so many different techniques to helping create change that you want to pick what’s the best solution for change. Courtesy of Google (#8)

  12. Learning outcome #3 Record, assess, and reflect on experiences with community and the influence of human services values, attitudes, and ethics in relationship to community change.

  13. I learned when promoting community change it is really important to take in consideration other cultures values. Cultural values is what makes a certain thing have importance. Respecting and understanding peoples values can help create change that everyone is more willing to support. This picture represents someone’s values to make the decision whether or not they want to make the right or wrong decision. Courtesy of Google (#9)

  14. I learned from this class that it is important to have a positive attitude when wanting to help promote change. You have to believe that other people want to change and society can change certain ways of habits. I learned it is important to think this way so that you have better results. I chose this picture because the people are happy and are influencing positive attitudes. Courtesy of Google (#10)

  15. This picture demonstrates that people have two directions in which they can follow, the high road of the low road. This class helped me learn that being ethical and taking the high road is the better choice. We need to have a conscious use of self and have an ethical self awareness. Courtesy of Google (#11)

  16. This learning outcome helped me realize that as a Human Service Professional we need to help instill change in our own communities. All growing communities need help assessing their needs and wants. I think that human service professionals can help with finding the resources to help their communities flourish. Being able to work along side the community and promote change and growth is imperative to being a good human service professional. Courtesy of Google (#12)

  17. Learning outcome #4 Analyze the systemic issues related to culture, diversity, and social class in the context of community systems.

  18. This outcome has helped teach me the importance of culture. We all come from different backgrounds, therefore we all have different insights and opinions about certain things. This class has helped me learn that we need to be proud of our cultural differences and stick up for one another's cultures. As a Human Service Professional you never know who you can be helping. By being accepting and understanding of other cultures you can better assist your clients. I picked this picture because I liked how it illustrated all the different cultures in the world. Courtesy of Google (#13)

  19. Writing my Policy Brief helped teach me more about diversity. My Brief was about Immigration Reform Laws. I think that it is interesting how as a country we are founded on diversity but we still struggle with a diversity problem. As communities we need to celebrate our diversity. That’s why I think that it is important as a community system to have certain spaces reserved, for example, China Town in San Francisco. Places like that help make our communities more diverse and bring us together. I chose this picture because I enjoyed all the diverse young people together. Courtesy of Google (#14)

  20. I learned that when it comes to social class and systemic issues, all we need to do is work together. Together we can stand by one another and create solutions to problems that others seem unsolvable. As a community we need to view systemic issues, analyze them and see how they can be helped and fixed, even if no one else thinks they can. I chose this picture because its of a homeless man who is begging on the streets. He is surrounded by people who should see homelessness as a community issue and want to pull together to try and people get off the street. Courtesy of Google (#15)

  21. This learning outcome has helped me learn that community systems are complex. They are made of up layers of diversity, culture and social class. Within those community systems there are systemic issues that can create potential change. It is important to be aware of those issues. I chose this picture because I felt that it was sending the message of a community and when unified positive things can grow. Courtesy of Google (#16)
