  2. Legal framework and statistics Three groups of immigrants according to EU institutions: • looking for asylums’ status • illegal immigrants • legal immigrants (from non-EU countries)

  3. National strategy for migration, asylum and integration – adopted for 10 years (2011-2020) Target groups: • illegal immigrants (1) • looking for asylums’ status (2) • legal immigrants (3) • foreign citizens with Bulgarian origin (4) • Bulgarian emigrants (5)

  4. (1) illegal immigrants 651 citizens from 3rd party countries tried to cross the BG frontier (mainly on the frontier between BG and Turkey) – Iraq (398), Turkey (61), Palestrina (61), Iran (26), Afghanistan (12); Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia, Algeria and Somalia – 34 in total; 28 – other countries; most often in 1 centre near Sofia with minimum standards required living conditions

  5. (2) looking for asylums’ status-760 people requests for asylum status from 49 countries; status given only to 114 refugees • (3) legal immigrants 5741 foreign citizens (3561 – Turkey, 596 – Macedonia, 232 – Moldova)

  6. (4) foreign citizens with Bulgarian origin- 90% of all the BG citizenship’s requests - on the basis of BG origin • (5) Bulgarian emigrants-near 700 000 emigrants left Bulgaria for the last 10 years according to the last census (2011)

  7. Who is involved in voluntary work combating poverty and social exclusion? Example of such action: • Last year left-oriented group of young people named Che Guevara organized and demonstrated against the bad living conditions and violating the human rights in the places for custody of illegal immigrants. With these actions they aimed to push the state to take appropriate measures and actions for better living conditions.

  8. Who is against the voluntary work and the immigrants in Bulgaria? • Due to the political situation in Bulgaria until 1989 (communist regime) there are more right- than left-oriented organizations. Most of them follow the neo-Nazi and Skin-Head ideology. These groups are always seeking for opportunities to fight against the immigrants.
