A system to enhance comfortable travel for wheelchair users and passengers with mobility challenges in Indian trains. Developed in collaboration with Callidai Motor Works, Chennai, and National Centre for Accessible Environments, New Delhi, this project focuses on addressing the boarding and deboarding challenges faced by individuals with reduced mobility. The solution includes a transit ramp or lift to bridge the gap between platforms and coaches, with a prototype "Wheelift" for high rail coaches. This cost-effective and replicable system aims to benefit thousands of passengers daily, promoting inclusivity and ease of access in railway travel.

Ground Realities Large number of wheelchair users, senior citizens, persons with mobility problems and reduced mobility cannot travel with Indian Railways since getting “in” and “out” of the train is a Herculean task
What needs to be done? A transit ramp or lift that can bridge the gap!
Transfers from the platform to the carriages and vice-a-versa • The mechanisms to bridge the horizontal and the vertical gap between the platform and the coach. • A portable “wheelift” is tried and tested at the New Delhi Railway station with Engineers of Northern Railways, RDSO and representatives of Railway Board.

Usage • located at the entrance of the Railway Stations with proximity to the Auto stand and Car park. • will also have a unique / popular mobile phone number that would be answered by the wheelift operator.
Usage • An estimated 8,000 PwDs across 160 major railway stations, including Senior citizens would benefit by utilizing the wheelift every day !! • Annually 3 million passengers would use the facility.
Cost of “wheelift” • The total cost would be approximately INR 3.90 Lakhs (0.39 million) inclusive of all taxes and levies per wheelift
