  1. Lord of the Flies By: William Golding PowerPoint by: Devin Booth Book published in 1954

  2. Introduction • During World War II, a group of British schoolboys of many ages and sizes crash-land on a deserted island after their plane is shot out of the sky. Since no one knows where they are, the schoolboys must survive by hunting, lighting a signal fire, and setting up their own form of chiefdom.

  3. Protagonist/Antagonist • Ralph is the first character introduced in the book, and is the chief of the boys. He is a calm and powerful leader. He leads the group in most activities except hunting. • Jack is the character who opposes Ralph’s leadership. He wants to be the chief, and has a different set of priorities. He leads the hunting party with his group of hunters (his choir group.)

  4. Central Conflict • In the story the boys are faced with the problem that they are on a stranded island that no one knows the location of. In order to be rescued, Ralph comes up with the idea of a signal fire. The boys must also survive on the island, so they build shelters for protection and organize a hunting party for food.

  5. Minor Characters • Piggy was the first of the boys that Ralph met on the island. He is intelligent, even though he has asthma and poor vision. • Simon was one of Ralph’s first friends and is hard working. • Samneric (Sam and Eric) are two twins that do everything together, so they are called Samneric.

  6. Critic Reviews • “The Lord of the Flies is a gripping story that will give you a different outlook on the world when you finish it’s dark, suspenseful plot.” • Review 1 • “ The Lord of the Flies has established itself as a classic novel in today’s literature, being compared to even The Catcher in the Rye.” • Review 2

  7. My Review • In my opinion, this book an outstanding classic that is realistic, and shows themes of survival and the struggle for power. The book also has colorful, detailed descriptions of the numerous parts of the island. The book has a different sort of plot, one that shows little sign of positive progress, and only gets darker. The Lord of the Flies main theme is that it is suspenseful and realistic rather than a fantasy, so that the reader may relate to the characters in the story. Overall, The Lord of the Flies is classic story containing realistic imagery, vivid descriptions, and a suspenseful plot with a theme different than that of other books.
