Gender Roles. Do NOW: Answer this. A  man and his son are in a car accident and sadly the man is killed. The boy is rushed to the hospital. At the hospital, the doctor looks at the boy and says , “I can’t operate on  this child,  he’s my  son!”   How  is this  possible?. ANSWER….

  2. Do NOW: Answer this • A  man and his son are in a car accident and sadly the man is killed. The boy is rushed to the hospital. At the hospital, the doctor looks at the boy and says, “I can’t operate on this child,  he’s my  son!”   • How is this possible?

  3. ANSWER…. • The Doctor was his mother….

  4. Gender Role: Definition • The overt expression of attitudes that indicate to others the degree of your maleness or femaleness; "your gender role is the public expression of your gender identity"

  5. Male Expectations • - Men are expected to be strong, aggressive, tall, handsome, bold, courageous, rough, tough, emotionless, insensitive, fearless and practical. • - They are not supposed to have weaknesses or vulnerabilities. • - They should always be prepared to fight their way. They should never retreat from a physical fight. Others should fear them. They should physically defend their family and work hard to earn to support it. They should choose careers considered 'manly' --- engineers, doctors, military, managers, etc.

  6. Male Expectations • Men are expected to have hobbies such as smoking, drinking, fast driving, chasing girls, and playing sports like hockey, football, etc. • They should not have 'girlie' hobbies like cooking, decorating, sewing, dancing, etc. • Men do NOT cry or show emotion

  7. Female Expectations • Women are supposed to have "clean jobs" such as secretaries, teachers, and librarians, Women are nurses, not doctors. Women are not as strong as men • Women are supposed to make less money than men • Women are quieter than men and not meant to speak out Women are supposed to be submissive and do as they are told • Women are supposed to cook and do housework Women are responsible for raising children

  8. Female Expectations • Women do not have technical skills and are not good at "hands on" projects such as car repairs • Women are supposed to look pretty and be looked at • Women are flirts • Women are never in charge

  9. Remember… • The previous slides are based on traditional gender role expectations

  10. Ticket to leave – Reflection Question • Explain at least one way that gender roles have changed? i.e. work place, school, socially, etc.
