  2. Public Opinion • The Vietnam War divided public opinion. • Two thoughts: • The war was needed to stop the spread of Communism. • The war was a Civil War that should be settled by the Vietnamese themselves.

  3. Division in the Government • Division in thought was also apparent in the government. • Leaders in the government sided with the Hawks or Doves. • Hawks – supported the war • Doves – wanted the war to end

  4. American Casualties • As the number of American casualties climbed into the thousands, more and more people began to oppose the war. • Why?

  5. Protests at Home • All over the United States, protests and marches against the war were held.

  6. Draft • Some young Americans were angry about being drafted. • They burned their draft cards in protest. • Some moved to Canada to avoid the draft.

  7. President Johnson • The problems of the war made President Johnson decide not to run for re-election in 1968.
