  1. What is Peripheral Arterial Disease?

  2. Not many people know what Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is. Well this disease is a progressive circulatory condition. And one disease you all need to understand, for your own good. This is a condition where the arteries that supply blood to your legs become blocked. • The fatty deposits (plaque) are the problem; they cause you to have poor circulation and intermittent leg pain while walking. Just think, fifty per cent of you with PAD have blockages severe enough to experience pain and complications which may lead to gangrene, limb amputation, heart attacks and strokes. I bet I have your attention at this point. Also Read: - Peripheral Arterial Insufficiency

  3. The symptoms many people have with PAD are mild to nothing. The first noticeable sign for most of you will be leg pain while walking. This is characterized by muscle pain and cramping in your legs. Now this symptom caused by activities such as walking will go away during a few minutes of rest. • Not all of you with PAD will experience pain, some of you may feel a mild numbness or weakness or heaviness in your muscles. Back to the pain, the location of the pain will be where your blocked artery is located. If not treated and the disease progresses you may experience your walking ability challenged.

  4. Other symptoms of PAD are; numbness in your feet or legs while you are at rest, you have cold legs or feet, there is hair loss at your extremities, your toe nails have changed, the colour changes in your legs or feet, you have ulcers on legs or feet that will not heal, or you have walking problems. If this is you, get checked out. • The causes are smoking, diabetes, heart disease or stroke, family history, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. The most common cause of PAD is atherosclerosis or as we know it, hardening of your arteries. Should you suspect you have PAD, as stated before, please consult your doctor. This leg circulation problem can affect a lot more than your legs. And as always you must live well to well. Also Read: - Treatment for Peripheral Arterial Disease
