The third age concept is new in Iceland U3A Reykjavik (www.u3a.is) Counts 320 full members and around 600 on the mailing list One of the youngest organisation in AIUTA The first and only such organisation in Iceland, established 2012.   3. U3A Reykjavikactivities Activities, lectures, visits, short courses,… are informal, giving no formal credits. Members are encouraged to creategroupsoninterestingtopics. U3A Reykjavikisaninnovation in Icelandicsociety in providing a differentforum, focusingonthe active mind and mutual exchange of knowledgeamongourmembers. EarlypreparationsforthethirdageThe BALL project Weactivelypromotepreparingearlyforthethirdageand forretirement Two years ago we defined and initiated the BALL-project (Be Active through Lifelong Learning) to investigate how best to plan and implement preparations for an active latter part of life, the third age. The project is now finished. The project was supported by the EU Erasmus+ programme, and carried out in a three country cooperation between Iceland Poland and Spain.   7. Labour market situation, employment and activity rates were studied. • Pension systems were compared. • Third age initiatives and attitudes in each country were mapped and discussed. Some specific initiatives studied. • Focus groups of experts and retirees were activated and „brain storming“ meetings held to discuss future perspectives. How did we work? Mapping: - The current situation in the three partner countries was investigated; how have preparations been organized, what experience has been gained and whether there are any trends to build on. Research and development work Survey: - A survey was conducted in the three partner countries, probing the attitudes and expectations of people over fifty Development and pilot testing: - Ideas on actions were developed and tested in pilot exercises in the partner countries Dr. Hans Kristján Guðmundsson, Chairman, U3A Reykjavík

  9. New ways should focus on the individual, who is encouraged to ask the same questions as in the youth: who am I, what do I want to become, where are my strengths, my passions, desires. Some conclusions It is necessary to think outside the box and personal dialogues are important. Training and mentoring. • The third age is the age of freedom. BALL results published The research results, now published,, are presented as guidelines and recommendations to all stakeholders, public or private, that have obligations and interests in offering advice to prepare for the third age. The recommendations are defined in three actions, each being independently applicable, while interlinked to form a complete package for best results. BALL guidelines and recommendations The three actions recommended are defined as follows Awareness Raising on the value and importance of the third age, directed both towards society and the individuals themselves. Personal Development Academy supporting individuals who need and want to evaluate their strengths, desires and possibilities to be prepared for the latter part of their lives. The Warehouse of Opportunities for the Third Age, a virtual pool, a portal, where individuals get access to all relevant opportunities and tools to choose appropriate means to reach their goals. Summarizing After becoming aware of your values and interests, having identified your strengths and desires through the “Academy” the Warehouse is there to provide you with a selection of opportunities. We believe that such new concepts in adult education, aimed specifically at the different groups approaching and living the third age, will certainly create innovative social benefits and will be extremely valuable for society in future demographic developments. Final Remarks Universities of theThirdAge, now spread acrosstheworld are extremelyimportantinstruments to providepossibilitiesforcitizens in theirthirdage, approaching and experiencingtheirretirement, to keepan active and open mind. Activatingthemind and enhancingtheself-awareness of thethirdagewillalsocertainly reduce theneedforcare and hospital beds.
