  1. AACP Report NABP/AACP District 5 August 6, 2010

  2. District 5 History of AACP Leadership • Jeff Baldwin (Nebraska), Immediate Past-President • Chris Bradberry (Creighton), Chair, Council of Deans • Rod Carter (Minnesota), President • Vickie Roche (Creighton), Past-President • Marilyn Speedie (Minnesota), Past-President • Larry Weaver (Minnesota), Past-President

  3. ACPE Policy on Simulation • Policy adopted by ACPE Board in June 2010 on use of simulation in introductory pharmacy practice experiences (IPPE) • Simulation proven as a learning strategy to advance skills and improve safety • Educational programs on simulation at AACP Annual Meeting were “standing room only”

  4. IPPE Competencies • Master list of competency expectations for students entering advanced practice rotations • Reduced from over 100 to 11 • Complete a medication history • Receive and process a prescription or drug order • Assessment SIG and Experiential Education Section are working to identify assessment strategies to evaluate student performance • Schools continue to struggle to identify adequate numbers of high quality rotation sites

  5. Application Trends • Pharmacy Centralized Application Service (PharmCAS) administered by AACP for 86 schools • 17,330 applicants completed 86,350 applications for Fall 2010 entering class • Completed a pilot of new program to facilitate completion of criminal background checks

  6. More New Schools • Five new schools admitted into AACP membership at Annual Meeting • 119 schools with accreditation status and admitting students in Fall 2010 • ACPE will conduct initial site visits at 3 additional schools for pre-candidate determination in January 2011

  7. Pharmacist Contribution to Expanded Primary Care • Highest priority issue for AACP in 2009 – 2010 • New legislation emphasizes access to primary care, prevention, and wellness • Schools must develop and implement new models of primary care education and interprofessional team-building • Research clearly indicates improved health outcomes, better satisfaction, and often lower costs when pharmacists are involved • AACP looks forward to working with NABP to examine how state laws and regulations can support primary care contributions by pharmacists

  8. “The Stars are Aligning” • Recognition of the capabilities of the “new American pharmacist” • Prepared to contribute to primary care delivery as a member of a patient-centered team • But not every consumer of health care understands this role • Academia must engage in partnerships to expand access to these kinds of pharmacist-delivered services • President Rod Carter’s primary focus in the year ahead

  9. Substance Abuse Education • Fresh look at substance abuse education, prevention, and assistance • Schools of Pharmacy and Boards of Pharmacy work hand-in-hand on this critical issue • Report of a special presidential committee sheds new light on the problem; to be provided to NABP to forward to each state

  10. Thanks for the planning and the partnership!
