  1. Leveraging research and future funding opportunities HajoEickenGeophysical Institute & International Arctic Research Center University of Alaska Fairbanks hajo.eicken@gi.alaska.edu UAF-DGGS-ACCAP Cryosphere Hazards WS

  2. Opportunities • RFPs and initiatives by federal agencies with potential links to Alaska (e.g., NOAA CIFAR, BOEMRE-CMI, etc.) • University programs & initiatives (e.g., AUTC, SNAP) • Arctic Observing Network – Study of Environmental Arctic Change (SEARCH) • Responding to Change – SEARCH UAF-DGGS-ACCAP Cryosphere Hazards WS

  3. Cooperative Institute For Alaska Research(partnership with NOAA) TWEAK: Tsunami Warning and Environmental Observatory for Alaska • Development of new tsunami hazard mitigation tools (numerical-hydrodynamic models) • Tsunami computational portal • Seismic network maintenance and upgrading • Earthquake detection and warning with seismology • Assessment of tsunami hazard and wave run-up • Education and outreach (adults and students) UAF-DGGS-ACCAP Cryosphere Hazards WS

  4. Alaska Tsunami Online Mapping Calculations and post-processing • Specify community • Specify grids • Choose source • Choose parameters • Inundation limits • Inundation depths • Drag force • Time series • The model: flux-formulated NLSW equations • The code: FORTRAN, using PETSc and MPI • Hardware: Sun Opteron cluster at ARSC • Visualization: Google maps and NCL • Data formats: ASCII, NetCDF, KML • Specify CPU hours and nodes • Submit the job • Monitor the job Job setup Visualization and archiving UAF-DGGS-ACCAP Cryosphere Hazards WS

  11. Arctic Observing Network (AON) • Roughly 50 AON projects (incl. support by NOAA & others) • Data dissemination and archival at Coop Arctic Data & Information Servicewww.aoncadis.org • State of AON: • Scientific community, federal/state/local agencies, stakeholders and general public all with a vision for an Arctic observing system • Now is the time to parse these perspectives and consolidate long-term observing efforts

  14. E.g.: NASA Applied Science Program • The program funds applied science research and applications projects to enable near-term uses of Earth science, transition applied knowledge to public and private organizations, and integrate Earth science and satellite observations in organizations’ decision making and services. • The projects are carried out in partnership with end user organizations. • The Disasters applications area focuses on forecasting, mitigation, and response to natural and technological disasters. • Call for proposals expected in near future – build on this workshop? • Contact Franz Meyer, UAF – fmeyer@gi.alaska.edu for details UAF-DGGS-ACCAP Cryosphere Hazards WS

  15. What is needed? • Assessment of information needs of decision-makers and research capacity of academia • Framework to support communication, coordination and follow-up with respect to research and information needs • Realistic expectations • Ability to seize major opportunities UAF-DGGS-ACCAP Cryosphere Hazards WS
