  2. Unit: Nuclear Monday, April 2, 2012 Objective: SWBAT determine if statements about nuclear energy are true or false. BR- What is nuclear energy? Where do you think it comes from? LESSON- • Nuclear Survey • Use computers to look up answers • Present out • HW- none

  3. Unit: Nuclear EnergyTuesday, April 2, 2012 Objective: SWBAT describe the 4 types of nuclear decay and write a chemical equation to represent each. BR- What do you think makes nuclear waste dangerous? LESSON- • Notes on Intro to Nuclear Energy (alpha, beta, gamma, neutron decay) • Problems in the book (in notes) • HW- • finish problems • begin vocab

  4. Unit: Nuclear EnergyWednesday, April 4, 2012 Objective: SWBAT write chemical equations for nuclear decay. BR- Which type of radiation will travel the farthest and requires the most to stop it? Which requires the least? LESSON- • Go over blue packet, prep for quiz!

  5. Unit: Nuclear EnergyThursday, April 5, 2012 Objective: SWBAT write the chemical equations for nuclear decay. BR- • Write the reaction for the beta decay of Co-60. • Write the reaction for the alpha decay of Th-232. • Write the reaction for the gamma decay of Bi-209. LESSON- • QUIZ on writing decay reactions • After the quiz- read pp 289-292. • Try to do “Practice” Half Life problems 1-5 on page 292 • HW- none 

  6. Easter Wknd

  7. Unit: Nuclear Tuesday, April 10, 2012 Objectives: SWBAT calculate how much of a sample will remain after a certain number of half lives. SWBAT calculate how many half lives have passed given a sample amount . BR- What are the 4 kinds of nuclear decay we have discussed? Give the symbol for each. LESSON- • Notes on decay rates • Math Skills packet • Do 1, 4, 7 on board, then work in groups on the rest • Half Life Problems 1-5 on page 292 (“Practice” at top of page) • HW- finish problems

  8. Unit: Nuclear EnergyWednesday, April 11, 2012 Objective: SWBAT explain how half life works in nuclear decay. BR- How many half lives have passed if 1/64 of the atoms in the sample are parent atoms? LESSON- • Half Life activity • Page 292

  9. Unit: Nuclear EnergyThursday, April 12, 2012 Objective: SWBAT solve half life problems for: Half-life (time), number of half-lives or how old a sample is given the other two variables. BR- • If a sample is still 25% parent nuclide, how many half lives has it experienced? • If the half life for this sample is 15 minutes, how old is it? LESSON- • Half Life Problems to get ready for quiz tomorrow. • Begin Reading Guide • HW- none 

  10. Unit: Nuclear EnergyFriday, April 13, 2012 Objective: same as yesterday BR- How many half lives have passed if 31/32’s of a sample has decayed? LESSON- • HALF LIFE QUIZ • Complete reading guide pp 293-297 • If time: Intro to nuclear reactions • Notes while going over the reading guide? • HW- none

  11. Unit: Nuclear Monday, April 16, 2012 Objective: SWBAT describe how a nuclear reactor generates electricity. BR- What is a nuclear fission reaction? How does it create energy? LESSON- • Notes through nuclear reactors 2. Nuclear Reactor Video Clip • HW- nuclear reactor sheet

  12. Unit: Nuclear Tuesday, April 17, 2012 Objective: SWBAT describe how fission and fusion create energy. BR- Trace the energy conversions in a nuclear power plant? (hint-start with nuclear energy and end with electricity) LESSON- • FUSION notes • Background Radiation Reading Guide • HW- none

  13. Unit: Nuclear EnergyWednesday, April 18, 2012 Objective: SWBAT describe background radiation. BR- What are some forms of background radiation you encounter every day? LESSON- • Go over Background Radiation a little • Nuclear Energy Worksheet • Video?

  14. Unit: Nuclear EnergyThursday, April 19, 2012 Objective: SWBAT BR- • . LESSON- • Study Guide • HW- Review for test!

  15. Unit: Nuclear EnergyFriday, April 20, 2012 Objective: SWBAT . BR- get out dividers and clear your desk! LESSON- • Nuclear Energy Test! • HW-
