Observations needed: Sulfate/CCN: Aircraft, ground, perhaps satellite Estimates of regional albedo (satellite + aircraft) Collaborations needed: Aircraft group: DLR/ FAAM, EUFAR, etc., to obtain coverage; also, standardized instruments Chem-transport modelers and observationalists who use both satellite and in situ observations. Grand-Challenge Approach to the Aerosol Indirect Effect • Test/improve predictions of sulfate/CCN from chemical transport models: needs global-scale observations in key regions • Test: Is there a useful correlation between model predictions and CCN concentrations, on a global scale? • Determine the correlation, if any, between sulfate predictions and cloud albedo. • If a correlation is present, use it to infer future albedo from model predictions of future sulfate (and other)
