Understanding the Ethics of Lying: Insights from Torah Sources

This exploration of lying focuses on two key Torah sources, Shemot and Devarim, which emphasize the importance of truth and integrity, especially in legal contexts. We learn that while honesty is paramount, there are exceptions where lying may be permitted for the sake of a mitzvah or to prevent harm. The teachings encourage us to uphold truthfulness and justice in our lives while recognizing that certain situations, like maintaining peace in relationships, might allow for nuanced truth-telling.

  2. LYING Two sources of Sheker: 1) שְׁמוֹת( :. We learn from these two sources to distance ourselves from lying especially in a court case. Also we learn to go in the ways of Hashem which is the ways of truth and emet, and justice. We should be truthful people and follow the ways of hashem.

  3. FACTS ABOUT LYING • You’re allowed to lie if its to do a mitzvah, or if it’s going to cause someone harm • Can’t lie even to a non-jew • You’re allowed to tell your friend you love her shirt when really you don’t, same with the bride and groom it’s a mitzvah to praise the brides beauty to the groom. • We shouldn’t lie to children because it will teach them and influence them to lie as well • Sketching is also a form of lying • Big lie=Small lie- no difference in either

  4. A LIE FOR PEACE? • Rav Yitzhak Blau’s wife was making his peas when he asked for lentils, and lentils when he asked for peas. His son, would tell his mom the opposite of what his father wanted and the mother would end up making the correct dinner for her husband. (Like what we learnt with Aharon making peace with the husbands and wives) • We see here how we are allowed to lie in order to keep peace between a couple in a marriage. Aharon, was well known for this. He would lie in to both the husband and wife in order to keep them together and so that they shouldn’t fight.
