  1. Counseling in Community OBJECTIVES Colossians 1: 28-29 28 He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ.29 To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.

Counseling in Community Describe what fully immature looks like? 3 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, 3 for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men? 1 Corinthians 3:1-3

John 15: 9-12

  4. Counseling in Community Describe what fully mature looks like? Relational Maturity=Godly Relating • A joyful commitment to the well-being of another at any cost to self • An openness to receive love rather than demand love • Ongoing awareness and repentance of commitment to self

And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me. • 22 “I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. 23 I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me. John 17: 21-23

  7. Counseling in Community That means we DON’T NEED • Healing from our wounds • Rather we need the right perspective • To stop sinning • Rather to allow God to continue to reveal the depth of our sin and depth of his grace

  8. Counseling in Community That means we DON’T NEED • Ministry “success” defined by “me” • Rather have ministry fruitfulness defined by God People don’t need fixed to become mature in Christ, they need to live in Godly relationships, loving communities

  9. Counseling in CommunityGodlyRelationships What do we need to become relationally mature? • What is God’s role? • What is the Body of Christ’s role? • What is a clinical counselor’s role? • What is a Xenos counselor’s role?

  10. Counseling in CommunityGodly Relationships God’s role • Stir a longing and a conviction in us to want to be in a relationship with Him • Took upon Himself our relationship with sin so we can be released from it. • Give us a relationship with the Holy Spirit

  11. Counseling in CommunityGodly Relationships God’s role: • Give us a relationship with His word (the word made flesh as a model and His written word that is alive in us) • Place us in the relationships He has sovereignly ordained as the ones we need

Counseling in CommunityClinical Counseling Clinical counseling is conducted by people who are educated, trained and licensed by the state, to address issues of neglect, abuse, addiction, trauma, diagnosable problems (depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, mood and personality disorders and so on) Clinical counselors develop treatment plans to manage and reduce symptoms

  17. Counseling in CommunityClinical Counseling Christian clinical counseling is conducted by people who are educated, trained and licensed by the state, to address issues of neglect, abuse, addiction, trauma and diagnosable disorders within the context of biblical truth.

  19. Counseling in CommunityClinical Counseling • The mental and emotional symptoms are varied in nature. • The duration of the symptoms last for longer than a couple of months. • The frequency of the symptoms have stayed the same, or have become worse.

Counseling in CommunityClinical Counseling • They do not yet have sufficient education of what to expect and what they need to manage symptoms • Do not yet have healthy coping skills to manage • They are not yet able to take advantage of the relational support God has given them • You don’t know how to instruct, support and motivate them in these areas.

Counseling in CommunityClinical Counseling There is some impairment in at least two areas of a person’s life: • Occupationally (work or school) • Socially (family, friends, church) • Mentally (ability to focus, memory, concentration, etc.) • Physically (sleep, diet, exercise, sicknesses, etc.) • Spiritually (apathy, isolation, doubt, confusion, etc.) 

  22. Counseling in Community Scope of Xenos Counseling Biblical counseling you receive at Xenos Christian Fellowship will be different from that of the mental health community. Biblical counseling is a form of discipleship to help people respond to God as taught in the Bible in the areas of lifestyle, love relationships, and serving others. Our biblical counselors are not licensed mental health counselors. If your needs are beyond the scope of biblical counseling, you may want to seek a licensed mental health provider.

  23. Counseling in Community Scope of Xenos Counseling Xenos counseling addresses spiritual, attitudinal, relational issues both from the perspective of wounds (how people have sinned against you) and the hurtful way within you (your sinful response)

  30. Counseling in CommunityThe Best working Relationship Conferral should: • Not be gossip (Do not say anything or say it in a way that would be any different if the client was listening in) • In most cases the client should be aware that we are conferring and about what.

  31. Counseling in CommunityThe Best working Relationship Complaints made by client about home church or counselor need to be investigated prior to reacting to client. Differences of opinion between home church and counselor should be discussed directly rather than with client
