  1. FOOTBALL An Overview

  2. Football Football is a: • Team Activity • Competitive Activity

  3. Football is a team activity Football is a team activity because you play with other people in the same team as you. Football teams are normally made up of 11 players. Sometimes though, people play with teams of 5 players on smaller pitches

  4. Football is a competitive activity Football is a competitive activity because there is a winner at the end of the game. The winner is decided in football by whoever scores the most goals. If it is a draw then games are sometimes decided by a penalty shoot-out

  5. Task 1 Look at the results below and for each game, decide who has won: • Barcelona 3 • Valencia 0 • Sunderland 1 • Chelsea 2 • Inter Milan 5 • Lazio 3 • Celtic 3 • Dundee United 8 • Falkirk 2 pen. 4 • Rangers 2 pen. 3

  6. Equipment There are various bits of equipment that are used in football. The most essential is a ball. Other equipment used includes goalposts, a net, shinpads, corner flags.

  7. Rules In all activities there are rules to keep us safe and to make sure the game is played fairly. A referee makes sure all the players keep the rules and gives free-kicks if they don’t.

  8. Task 2 With the person next to you, think of as many rules of football as you can.

  9. Rules • Only the goalkeeper can use their hands • You’re not allowed to tackle with 2feet • Offside • You can’t kick other players • The ball has to stay inside the pitch • Throw-ins have to be taken with 2hands • The goalkeeper isn’t allowed to handle the ball outside his box

  10. Skills Football involves lots of different skills. Skills are general terms for actions that can be done in many different ways. Skills in football include: • Passing • Shooting • Dribbling • Tackling

  11. Football Football pitches are quite big. They are long and wide. This means that there is lots of space to run into and to pass the ball into. The best football teams use all the football pitch.

  12. Football Opposition teams do not have enough players to mark the whole pitch so a good way of attacking is to use the width and length of the pitch to spread defenders out and make it hard for them to stop you scoring.

  13. Football We can use the whole width and length of the pitch by not staying close to the ball all the time. Teams need some players to move away from the ball and create space. Some players should stay very wide on the pitch and some should stay high up to spread players out.

  14. Task 3 In the following situations, suggest where you could run to ‘spread play’: represents you X represents a team-mate, an attacker O represents a defender

  15. Situation 1 O O X O O
