  2. Introduction Oh no! A wolf has come into the barnyard and scared all of the animals. Can you help to sort and count the animals?

  3. Task You and your partner will make a book showing how to sort and count the barnyard animals. The artist will sort and color the animals. The writer will write the number word and numeral for each group of animals.

  4. Resources • “A Barnyard Counting Poem” by Mary Ann George Click here • Barnyard Math Title Page Click here • Barnyard Math Worksheets Click here • 11 pieces of construction paper per group • Stapler • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils • Scissors • Glue

  5. Process • Listen to the teacher read the poem, “A Barnyard Counting Poem”, by Mary Ann George. • Click on the picture to play the following four games: Fishy Count Counting with Lecky Number Labeling Flo and Zo Sort It Out • Click on your job to find out what to do next. Artist Writer eight

  6. Artist • Help your partner cut the animal pictures out. • Sort the pictures by animals. • Glue each group of animals to a page of the book. • Help your partner color the animals. • Put the pages in number order, starting with zero.

Writer • Help your partner cut the pictures out. • Count the animals that your partner glued to the page and write the numeral for how many. • Write the number word for how many animals there are. • Help your partner color the animals. • Put the title page on the front of the book and staple it together.

  9. Conclusion Great job! All the animals are back in the barnyard. You did a great job sorting, counting and writing numbers.

  14. Teacher Notes • The teacher or a parent volunteer will need to read the WebQuest to the students. • The teacher puts the class in groups of two and assigns the jobs. • Copy the worksheets for the students. Use a copy machine if you want all pictures to be colored by the students. • Adaptation: Instead of having the students do numerals 0-9, you can have them do 0-5. Use this worksheet instead.
