    1. John Boyd Dunlop By Keith and Alasdair

    2. Early years John Boyd Dunlop was born on the 5th of February, 1840 in Dreghorn, North Ayrshire. He was a veterinary surgeon for 10 years, then he moved to Belfast.

    3. Invention He invented the first inflatable tyre for his son’s tricycle in 1887. In 1888 he patented it and became a friend of Queen Victoria in the process.

    4. How are tyres made? As many as 200 raw materials can be used in the construction of one tyre. The tread is the grooved outer layer in contact with the road.

    5. Brakes Ceramic brakes are generally better than metal brakes because metal brakes can catch fire under pressure.

    6. Death Dunlop died in 1921 in Dublin, Ireland and is buried in Deans Grange Cemetery. But in his honour, a Ł10 note is issued in the Northern bank of Ireland.

    7. Impact on society Keith: My opinion of John Boyd Dunlop is that if he hadn’t been here, cars would be a bumpy ride without inflatable tyres. Alasdair: See above.
