Recommendations for Lowering Dental Education Costs and Reducing Student Borrowing • Promote financial literacy and ensure that the highest quality financial aid services and counseling are available to prospective and current students, residents, and fellows. • Continue to pursue funding for scholarships from stakeholder communities. • Continue to promote mission alignment with resource management in academic dental institutions. • Explore alternative dental education models. • Enhance advocacy partnerships with other dental organizations. • Continue to take a leadership role in representing the interests of ADEA’s membership on issues related to the cost of dental education and student borrowing. • Loan Repayment/Forgiveness Programs • GME and THCGME • FQHCs

Suggestionsfor Future Research • Conduct more extensive trend analyses of available cost and borrowing data. • Establish data sharing agreements among various stakeholders. • Refine ADEA and CODA surveys so they provide information that supports planning, policy, and decision making associated with the cost of dental education and dental student borrowing. • Encourage both local and national qualitative research that examines the status of students’ educational loans. • Conduct a national study to identify the costs of implementing alternative educational models, especially IPE. • Examine implications of rising debt among allied dental students.
